And The
Alternative Is.... Now
I don’t mean to sound harsh, but I do want to be clear.
Every once in a while we are “treated” to some “enlightened”
individual who is determined to eliminate what the Bible describes as faith.
I heard one on the radio the other day.
This fellow droned on and on about how faith has stifled any real
progress that man might achieve. After
several minutes of this, he proclaimed how joyous it would be if faith were
completely taken out of the way. All
right, so you remove faith and the alternative is……….what?
I can tell you what the alternative is.
Nothing! And that’s just
what I heard—nothing! The
very ones who will denounce faith as “pie in the sky by and by” will turn
around and offer “pie in the sky by and by.”
They have nothing substantive to offer.
Thus, those who oppose faith and desire its elimination have one thing in
common. They have nothing to offer
as an alternative to faith. Now,
let me point out that “faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of
God” (Rom. 10:17). So, if you
follow the Bible, which is substantive, you actually have something to guide
your life. The opponents have
nothing that compares to the Bible. They
have no great document that affords something to guide your life.
They just think life would be grand if the Bible were gone.
What would this “brilliant thinking” be like in the field of
medicine. Why, let’s just
get rid of those pesky medical journals and life will just be grand.
And what would you have doctors and surgeons go by—intuition?
Somehow drilling into my skull for an ingrown toenail doesn’t seem like
too grand a thing. If
you want an example of the “grand life” where faith in God is rejected, look
in Romans 1 at those who “did not like to retain God in their knowledge”
(Rom. 1:28). Doesn’t seem to be
described as grand, does it? Terry
