Dangers to Our Families #4: Immoral Messages Our children are growing up in a vastly different world than most of us grew up in. American culture has become more and more secular, meaning less and less godly. Consider the following facts: Depending on how the numbers are interpreted, half of today’s marriages will end in divorce. Tonight enough teens to fill the Rose Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and the average Super Bowl will practice prostition to support their drug habit. There are 3,700 abortions per day in the United States, or 1.37 million per year. Fifty two percent are 24 years old and under. Sixty four percent of the abortions are on women that have never been married. An estimated 43% of all women will have at least one abortion. Forty percent of all 14 year old girls alive today will be pregnant by age 19. Thirty five percent of children under 14 show stress symptoms. Every 78 seconds a teenager in the United States attempts suicide. All the above numbers are merely the symptoms of a greater problem. We have become a baseless society. As a nation our values conflict. We say we value people but we allow abortion on demand. We speak of free speech in order to listen to raunchy music but the Bible can not be read in the classroom. Marriage is being redefine to include homosexuals but the traditional family is disappearing. The problem is we as a society have drifted away from God. "For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse...Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever" (Romans 1.20, 24-25). We are reaping what we have sown. Look at the messages our young people are receiving. Sex sells and no where do we see this better than in advertising. A number of years ago Brooke Shields in various positions said that nothing came between her and her Calvin Klein jeans. Music videos on MTV and VH1 not only contain sexually explicit lyrics but shows it. Movies such as "Broke Back Mountain" advocate homosexuality. Producers and Executives warn us against trying to restrict their "creative" tendencies. Let us not forget the messages our children are receiving in public and sometimes private schools. There is not a course in your child’s school called "Situation Ethics" but they are introduced to it in various classes. Situations are developed in which a child must choose the "right course" or action. In many cases the "right course" is what would normally be unacceptable. For instances, lying is wrong but how about lying to not hurt someone’s feelings. Human life is sacred but what if you were on a life boat that only held 10 people and there were 15 trying to get on board. You choose which ones live and die. Afterward the principle is then applied to other situations. Young people are left believing that anything could be right under the proper conditions and nothing is wrong. Let us not leave out the influence of ungodly religion. Calvinism teaches that man is totally depraved. Therefore, we are programmed to sin and have sinful desires. Young people can take such doctrine and argue that they are only doing what God makes them do, it is not their fault it is God’s.Many denominations have given up preaching on morality and ethics in order to preach a "positive gospel." Popularity is in and godliness is out in many churches. Idolatry in the Old Testament often appealed to the flesh and so does many religions today. Food courts, play day, line dancing, and karate classes has replaced the pulpit. During "Fat Wednesday" Catholics party it up and engage in various sins, all in the name of God. Slot machines have been blessed by priests. Religious people are as immoral as the non-religious folks. What are we to do? Do not give up and allow the world to win. We have the Bible and it is the word of God. Teach your children that they are not made in the image of a neoplasm but in the image of God, Genesis 1.26027. Man has a living soul and life is more than partying it up. Our purpose here is to serve God, Ecclesiastes 12.13 and not ourselves. Teach your children that God loves them and Jesus died for them, John 3.16. They will not find love or happiness from a bottle, a pill, or a needle but from the right relationship with God. Stress that sex is not dirty or vulgar inside marriage but is sinful anywhere else, Hebrews 13.4. Point out that good is determined by God’s law and not man’s feelings. In short, fulfill your responsibility as a parent. Do not depend on television, movies, radio, or the schools to make your children good people. If they are going to know about God it will be because you have done your part. Make sure you are providing the right example to your children of a loving husband/father and wife/mother. Spend time with your children. Lines of communication are not built over night but over years. Talk to your children when they are young and do not stop when they grow into teenagers. Children need and want their parents to help them through those difficult years. Remember urban warfare is fought one block, one home, and one person at a time. We are battling the forces of Satan in our homes. D.T. |
