Dress Code

I found the following in the Jonesboro Sun, August 30, 2005, on page A, with the title "Acceptable Fashions".

All clothing must be of appropriate size; pants and shirts must be worn at the waistline; belts must be worn if the pants-skirts have belt loops; females’s blouses must not show cleavage; females’s blouses must be long enough to cover the midriff when arms are raised straight over the head; shorts, skirts, skirts with slits and dresses must be no higher than four inches above the knee; and clothing that advertises alcohol or tobacco, and clothing suggesting, representing or promoting gang activity or violence are not allowed.

Prohibited clothing items include: Sunglasses, mesh tops, fishnet tops, tank tops, tube tops, spaghetti straps, bare backs, bare midriffs, facial jewelry, tongue rings, jeans with holes, slits, lounge wear, house shoes, hats, hoods, caps, and spandex.

I found the following sentences in the article to be of particular interest. "The students developed this list, not faculty. You’d be amazed at how positively the student body has accepted it. They immediately began to display behavior that we expected."

Editor’s Note: This article points out at least three things. First, our society recognizes the difference between modest and immodest clothing. Second, many young people do not like the current clothing styles and find them distracting. Third, the way people dress, changes the way they feel about themselves and their behavior. D. T.
