Godly Fathers Godly fathers will have many attributes. Let me suggest the following as a good start. F – Faith is necessary for a man to fulfill his responsibilities to his God, family, neighbors, and friends. The world has made being a father easy. He can live with a woman with or without the benefit of marriage and leave whenever he wants. He can have children and expect the mother and society to provide for them. He can shirk his responsibilities and blame it on have a mid-life crisis. One of the challenges of a christian father is being different than the rest of the world. "1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." (Romans 12) A man of faith will honor his marriage vows because he respects God’s arrangement. He will honor his wife as the weaker vessel, be there for his children, provide for his family, and be a good neighbor because God expects that of him, see 1 Peter 3.7; 1 Timothy 5.8; Matthew 22.39. But it all starts with his commitment to God. "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind" (Matthew 22.37).A – Action is necessary in being a good Christian and father. A person can read all the books on serving God and being a good father, but unless he does the job he is not a good father. Such a principle is taught many times in the Bible. "Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven" (Matthew 7.21). ""But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does" (James 1.22-25). Did you notice verse 25 does not say a "doer of the word" but a "doer of the work." Serving God and being a godly father requires working which requires action. Too many fathers are lazy and want somebody else to do their job. They want somebody else to teach the class, lead in prayer, serve on the Lord’s Table, provide for their families, etc. A true father will want to do his job.T – Teaching others by word and example. What our children know about God will come primarily from the home. The responsibility in the home is placed on the father. "And you fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord’ (Ephesians 6.4). A godly father will be more concerned about his children’s souls than their grades.H – Holy in conduct and attitude. "I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting;" (1 Timothy 2.8). If your children were asked who is the godliest man they know? A godly father will want to live his life so as to be the answer. When our children need the prayers of a righteous man they can come to us.E – Encouragement is part of being a father. To encourage others to serve God, to do better, and not be afraid to fail can come from godly men. Let us not minimize our influence on our children. The brightest star in the universe can easily be out shown by a flashlight. Why? Because the flashlight is closer! You should be the closest man to your children. R –Reverence toward God. To revere God is to respect and honor His word. If you truly have reverence toward God you will obey His word and become a Christian. You will then be faithful to that commitment in your life. From this all else depends. D. T. |
