The Focus Is On The
Future
We
went to Wednesday night Bible Study at
Orleans
when we were in
Indiana
last month (November, D.T.). I preached there for four years and we lived there
for two. There were friendly faces and good memories every where. The Bible
Study was in Philippians. One of the things we studied was what Paul had to say
in Philippians 3.13-14, “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended;
but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching
forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize
of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” The teacher emphasized how we need
to stay focused on the future. This is not to say that we ignore the past. It is
that we should not be fixated on the past. I liked his illustration. He said
that everyone who drives a car always looks out the windshield. They only glance
occasionally at the rear view mirror. No one drives a car by focusing on the
rear view mirror. I thought this was a very effective illustration with which
all who drive can related. Now, what we need to do is to order our lives,
especially our spiritual lives, in the same way. We need to keep focused on the
future with only occasional glimpses at the rear view mirror. – Terry Sanders
