He Died For Me During the Civil War, those with money could hire some one to serve in the army in their place. A wealthy man near Chattanooga, TN hired a poor farmer to do just that. The farmer was killed in battle. When the body was brought home, the wealthy man paid for the burial and made sure the poor farmer’s family was taken care of for the rest of his life. He made sure fresh flowers were on the grave of the poor farmer. On the tombstone he had the inscription, "He Died for Me." I dare say the wealthy man realized the sacrifice that was made by the other man. He probably felt some guilt for being alive while the other man was dead. We are in much the same situation as the wealthy man. Jesus died for me and you. He took our place on the cross and paid the price for our sins, Romans 2.23; 6.23. Once a year our nation observes Memorial Day to remember those who died for us in battle. Every Sunday Christians observe what is called the Lord’s Supper. We remember His death on the cross by the memorial He gave to His disciples before His death, Matthew 26.26-29. We need to be sad that Jesus had to die for us, but be thankful that He was willing to do so. We invite you to come and be with us this "Memorial Day." –Dennis Tucker |
