Help, I Have Fallen And Can’t Get Up! The above phrase was used in a commercial a number of years ago. They were advertizing for a service that would help people that live alone to get help if they fell. For some reason the phrase took on a comical aspect. Just saying it would bring chuckles from those within earshot. However, there is a real and serious aspect to the above title. If you have ever fallen and cannot get up, you know it is not funny. One time I fell down some steps and needed help to go to the hospital. I was walking on crutches for a couple of weeks. Believe me it was not a laughing matter. Most of use realize that if we see a person that has fallen we should not laugh but help them up. If the condition warrants it we would call a doctor or ambulance. There are some spiritual applications to the above title. It is not funny when a person falls, i.e. sins. Sin is against our God and will cause a person to be lost. Television often depicts sin as humorous. Comedians use vulgarity, take the name of God in vain, and talk about things that are indecent in the hope of being funny. Some children will curse and then laugh at their use of words. Sin is never funny! It is not funny when the world does it and it is not funny when Christians do it. "For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning.. But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: ‘A dog returns to his own vomit,’ and, ‘a sow having washed, to her wallowing in the mire." (2 Peter 2.20,21). I once heard a short story about a little lamb that lived next to the hogs. Each day the little lamb would look at those hogs wallowing in the mire and muck. They looked happy and content. So finally, one day the lamb got through the fence. He plunged into the mud and his wool got muddy and heavy, so he could not move. Fortunately, his mother saw him, got through the fence, and rescued the little lamb. After she go him clean he asked why the hogs were so content but he was only stuck. His mother said, "Lambs do not wallow in the mire." As Christians we need to heed the lesson. One reason the "Help! I have fallen and can’t get up!" line may have been funny is because we tend to laugh when something makes us nervous. The sad truth is that someday we may grow old and need help. It will be then that we will know if those around us really care about us. The same is true spiritually. "Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted" (Galatians 6.1). Thre may be a time that you or I may be in sin and will not need help. It will be at that time that we will know if there are any "spiritually" minded people around us. Many will simply stay away or look the other way, but the spiritual brother or sister will come and try to restore us. If we will not repent the spiritual person will continue and bring this before the church and even to the point of marking the one is sin. Gentleness demands the proper attitude but also the proper strength. The words gentle means strength under control. Therefore the spiritual brother will not have a haughty attitude but will have the strength to proceed with determination to follow the Bible in its teaching about those who have fallen.
