Holy Spirit #4

The Holy Spirit and Jesus

Introduction: So far we have examined the person and personality of the Holy Spirit. The Hoy Spirit in the physical and spirit realm and the Holy Spirit in revelation. That is the role of the Holy Spirit in revealing to man the will of God. In the Bible the Holy Spirit spoke through prophets, visions, angels, and the written word. The Bible is the product of inspiration and since inspiration is through the Holy Spirit the Bible is the product of the Holy Spirit.

Pentecostals teach that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three names referring to one Being. Bible points out the role of each in our salvation. If we misunderstand one we misunderstand the other. Perhaps this is one reason they misunderstand our salvation.

Jesus told His disciples that the Father dwells in Him, John 14.7,10. Just as we can learn a lot about the Father by looking at Jesus; so can we learn about the Holy Spirit by looking at Jesus.

I) The Role of the Holy Spirit in Preparation of Jesus

A) Old Testament prophecies concerning the Christ.

1. By inspiration prophets foretold the coming of Jesus.

            a. His place of birth was foretold, Micah 5.2

            b. His lineage is given, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Judah, Genesis   49.10; Hebrews 7.14

            c. The lineage of David, Isaiah 11.1

            d. Born of a virgin, Isaiah 7.14

B) All of this to prepare man for the coming of the Messiah, Matthew 2.1-6

1. The apostles  used the above facts to preach to and convert the             Jews.

2. Old Testament is the New Testament concealed; the New Testament is the Old Testament revealed.

            a. The purpose of the Old Testament and therefore the purpose of the prophecies of the Old Testament was to bring the Jews to Jesus.

II) The Role of the Holy Spirit in Jesus’ Birth

A) Jesus is God with us or God incarnate.

1. Incarnation is the union of a member of the Godhead with humanity.

2. The assuming of a body of human flesh by a divine being, Phil. 2.5-7

            a. Jesus was not an illusion or a pretender.

            b. The Jews understood the humanity of Jesus; they rejected His deity.

3. How was this possible?

            a. Agnostics said it was impossible; Jesus did not live in a body like ours, 1 John 4.1-4

            b. Catholics teach the “Immaculate Conception” the miracle was in the birth of Mary. She did not inherit the sins of her parents therefore Jesus did not inherit her sins.

            c. Some today come close to teaching either Jesus was not deity or not human. Although the Bible plainly teaches He was man and He was God in the flesh.

B) How was this possible?

1. By the power of God, in the person of Jesus, and through the work of the Holy Spirit, Luke 1.35;  Matthew 1.20

2. Mary asked, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” Luke 1.34

            a. No biological father but a divine one, Matthew 1.25; Luke 3.23

            b. He was begotten of the Father through the Holy Spirit, John 1.14.

            c. Without the Holy Spirit there would be no incarnation.

            d. The three; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit can be seen in the       incarnation

III) The Holy Spirit at the Baptism of Jesus

A) Recorded in John 1.32-34; Matthew 3.16; Mark 1.10; and Luke 3.22

1. As He came up out of the water we have the physical manifestation of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove.

2. Followed by a declaration of God.

3. Just as our baptism starts our service to God as one of His children; the baptism of Jesus began His earthly ministry.

B) Two important points

1. Jesus received the Holy Spirit without measure, John 3.34

            a. The Apostles and prophets did not receive the same degree as Jesus

            b. Moses and Elijah were not equal to Jesus in what they received.

            c. All that the Holy Spirit could give to Jesus was given

2. Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit, Luke 4.1,4

            a. Yet Jesus was tempted, got hungry, and died.

IV) The Holy Spirit in the Ministry of Jesus, Acts 2.22

A) The Holy Spirit was with Jesus as He taught, Matthew 12.18

B) The Holy Spirit worked through Jesus in the miracles He performed, Matthew 12.28

1. Acts 10.38 God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and power

2. Just as the Father worked through Jesus; do did the Holy Spirit

V) Holy Spirit in Jesus’ Death

A) Psalm 22 describes what Jesus went through on the cross.

B) Isaiah 53 Jesus is the lamb of God offered for our sins.

C) Zechariah 12.10 not a bone was broken.

The Holy Spirit Sent By Jesus

A) Before His death Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit, John 16.7,13

1. No one else ever promised to send the Holy Spirit

2. He came to glorify Jesus, to be a comforter, and Helper to the Apostles.

B) Preparation for the Holy Spirit, John 20.22-23

1. Jesus breathed on them.

            a. He did not give them the Holy Spirit for the Holy Spirit did not come until the Day of Pentecost

            b. It was to prepare them

2. Similar to Genesis 2.7 when God breathed into man. These two verses are the only time this word for “breathed” is used.

3. God breathed the scriptures, 2 Timothy 3.16

4. What will the Apostles be able to do? V. 23

            a. Consistent with Matthew 16.19; Matthew 18.15-19

            b. How was this to be done? Through the preaching of the Gospel of Christ.

            c. The Apostles declared the condition or terms of forgiveness.

Conclusion: Jesus’ time of working under the authority of the Father and with the Holy Spirit is now over. His great sacrifice for our sins has been performed. Now it is necessary to listen to His words; to read the scriptures provided by the Holy Spirit. Next lesson the Holy Spirit and the Apostles.
