Important Words

While watching the opening ceremony of the Olympics the commentator on television mentioned that there is no such thing as a Chinese alphabet. In writing the Chinese language one writes symbols. Each symbol is a word in and of itself. This makes writing Chinese very difficult for one stroke may change totally the word one is writing.  I got to thinking about this in relation to our English language and the importance of certain words. By looking at the symbols below one can understand the difficulty in learning how to write or draw each symbol and its corresponding meaning.

There are about 750,000 words in the English language. The number of words increases as new technology increases and phrases are created. Words such as “ipod” or “laptop” are really words being combined to make a new word.

There are some words we need to understand.

The Greatest word: God, Genesis 1.1. He is our Creator. Without God nothing would exist that now exists. Everything in the Bible from this point onward teaches us about God’s power and plan for man’s salvation. Without God we would not even understand the word love. It is John 3.16 that shows us God’s love for man in His willingness to give His Son for our salvation. Perhaps that is one reason that our world today has such a convoluted definition of love. Rejecting God leaves man without a reference point to define love.

The Longest word, in a major dictionary has 45 letters. It is the word Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis which is a medical term referring to a specific lung disease. But the longest word in the Bible is eternity. It means forever or without end.  Revelation 22.5 simply says forever and ever. We have no way to comprehend eternity except to say it means there will be no ending.

The Swiftest word is time, James 4.14. We often ask where the time went or say that time is just flying by. We measure it, but can not keep it or stop it from passing by.

The Nearest word is NOW , it is the present. Yesterday is gone and there is nothing we can do to recapture it. Tomorrow is not here yet. Therefore, Now is all we have. The Apostle says now is the acceptable time and now is the day of salvation in 2 Corinthians 6.2. The question is not what we have done or what we will do but what are we doing now?

The Darkest word is SIN. The wages of sin is death, Romans 6.23a. Death means to be separated from God. There is nothing worse than to be separated from God for eternity.

The Meanest word is HYPOCRISY, Matthew 23 Jesus used this word 8 times to condemn the scribes and Pharisees. They were pretending to be godly on the outside but inside they were children of Satan. We may be able to fool our fellow man and even ourselves but God knows when we are sincere and when we are pretending.

The deepest word is SOUL. Everyone has one and it will spend eternity some where, Ecc. 12.7.

The friendliest word is COME as Jesus said come unto me all who are heavy laden and I will give you rest, Matthew 11.28-30. – Dennis Tucker
