It Is a Day By Day Process

People have been asking how Regena, the children, and I have been adjusting to Owensboro. I will admit there are some changes from what we are used too. Simple things such as learning the television channels, radio stations, getting used to a new bank, and a host of other things are involved in moving from one area to another. As strange as it may sound it is even an adjustment being back in Kentucky and close to family. I tell people it is a day by day thing. One does not suddenly get used to a place but over a period of time it happens. I remember when we moved to Jonesboro, AR and feeling so lost. I could not remember the names of the members, and everything felt uncomfortable. Somehow, and somewhere along the line I got use to the place and it felt like home. I do not recall when that happened because it was subtle.

The same goes for many other aspects of our lives. One does not suddenly become a "strong" Christian. First, we have to be taught the word of God. Most likely you were like the Ethiopian Eunuch, when asked, "30 Do you understand what you are reading?" 31 And he said, "How can I, unless someone guides me?" And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him." (Acts 8) You were taught the truth by someone else. While the decision to obey the gospel may have been made one day the process of learning the truth probably took a number of days. After your conversion you were a babe in Christ in need of milk and not solid food, Hebrews 5.12-13). To grow strong in the Lord one must partake of the Word of God., "1 Therefore, laying aside all malice, all guile, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious. " (1 Peter 2) I heard that a young man approached Homer Hailey one day and said he wished he knew the Bible like brother Hailey. Homer Hailey replied, "If you study the Bible eight hours a day for 40 years you will." Good point! Bible knowledge comes by study, meditation, and application. Paul said something similar in 2 Tim 2: 15, "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

One does not overcome the loss of a loved one in one day but over a period of time. Those that have lost a child, parent, spouse, brother, sister, or some one else they loved can a test to this fact. The pain and agony of losing someone can be great and almost unbearable. You will never forget that person but over a period of time you will learn to accept their passing. Such allows us to move on and enjoy life again. "13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. 15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep." (1 Thes. 4) Our love ones would not want us to sorrow as those that have no hope but to live so as to please God and go to heaven.

One does not overcome their personal weaknesses in one day but over a period of time. An elder and gospel preacher by the name of Kelly Ellis one time spoke of his tempter. Such surprised me for Kelly was one of the meekest men I have every known. But he had worked on controlling his anger. Each one of us has temptations that will try us. However, we can overcome them which will help us grow and face other problems. "2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. "(James 1:2-5)

Just as the greatest doctor, pilot, scientist, etc. did not learn everything one day but over a period of time so we learn and grow as Christians. . It just depends on how determined we are that makes the difference. It is not the days by themselves but what we do with those days that matters. D. T.
