Names of God Names of God EL- The deity, God in power and distinctiveness of His Divine nature—Under this term He appears as: EL-ELYON— God Most High, Genesis 14.18-22 EL-ROI— God of Seeing, Genesis 16.13 EL-OLAM— The Everlasting God, Genesis 21.33 EL-BETHEL— God of Bethel, Genesis 31.13 EL-LOHEYISRAEL— God, the God of Israel, Genesis 33.20 EL-SHADDAY— God Almighty, Genesis 17.1 — Shadday probably means ‘mountain’ used symbolically of changelessness and enduring strength, contrasted to the helplessness of man. ELOHIM — Plural; used regularly with singular verbs and adjectives to denote a singular idea. Adon— (ADONAI) — Describes God as ‘Sovereign’ orLord’ pointing to His divine authority and executive rule. JEHOVAH — (YAHWEH) — Personal name par excellence of Israel’s God. The word is defined to mean; to be, to exist, and to go beyond these meanings to mean rather “to be actively present.” (see Exodus 3.13-16).
