Post Election Thoughts

We have just lived through one of the longest Presidential campaigns in history. At the danger of testing your patience I want to express some thoughts on the results of this past week’s election.

The Bible tells us to pray for our leaders. “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2.1-2). Twice David refused to kill King Saul. The reason for sparing Saul’s life was David’s respect for God. We yield to the governing authorities because we respect God. “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God” (Romans 13.1).

The Roman government was one of the most cruel to exist. Yet Jesus told the Jews to render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s, Matthew 22.21. The fact is, I may disagree with many of the policies of the current or future administration, but as a Christian I am still going to be a good citizen, father/mother, brother/sister, etc. In other words I will continue to serve God.

In looking at different issues and votes I will tell you there are some things that are encouraging and some discouraging.

This country elected a black man to be the next President. Racism has been a problem for many years. Slavery allowed blacks to be treated as cattle and livestock instead of human beings. Such is wrong and should not have been allowed. We are all created in the image of God. Each person has a soul and deserves our love. The Gospel of Christ makes no distinction between races or nationalities. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3.28). Obama was supported by many different groups of people.

One issue that many may not have noticed was the states that passed amendments to their constitution that banded homosexual marriages. The people of California passed an amendment that said marriage was between a man and a woman. Likewise, Florida and Arizona passed amendments defining marriage as between a man and a woman. I am not aware of any time when such an amendment has been voted on in which it did not pass. Most people in this country understand that marriage is not between homosexuals.

On the negative side, laws seeking to limit abortion were defeated in Colorado and South Dakota . The laws allowed abortion if the life of the mother was threatened, in cases of rape, and incest. The language of the law was that life began at conception. The voters in both states rejected the language of the law.

Two states decided to allow people to possess limited amounts of marijuana. Washington voted to allow physician assisted suicide in cases of terminally ill patients. The fact is there are a host of moral issues in which this country is divided.

As a word of encouragement, do not forget that we worship the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, 1 Timothy 6.15. We still have the ability to preach the word and worship God without fear from our government. If we want to continue to have these freedoms, we must teach the Gospel of Christ to the world around us. Finally, the darker the night the brighter the light shines. Godliness stands out when it is exhibited. Now is the time to shine. – Dennis Tucker
