Remembering the Dead and Grasping the Future

I got to thinking about two events that happen at this time of the year. One is Memorial Day and the second is Graduation. The first is a time to reflect and remember those that have passed away. The holiday was set up to remember those that gave their lives in service to this country. We are truly indebted to those that died on the battlefields or on ships protecting our rights and way of life. Of course we also remember our loved ones that have passed from this life and await the Day of Judgment. There is nothing we can do concerning their future. One Day Jesus will return in the clouds and the dead that were faithful to our Lord will raise first and the living will then go to be with Him in the air, 1 Thessalonians 4.12-16.

Then there is graduation. A time when parents wonder where the years went and young people rejoice to finally be out of High School. It marks the end of an era and the beginning of another. Graduation offers experiences, new opportunities, new freedoms, and new responsibilities to young people as they get ready to embrace the world. As parents we hope our children will always do well, live long and prosper. To quote another writer: We are victims of our past, prisoners of the present and judges of our future.”

The common ground for the dead and the living is the word of God. The living are to abide in His word and the dead will be judged by it. We should never forget our creator nor those that have gone before us. – Dennis Tucker
