Sonlight The Sun was created on the fourth
day as recorded in Genesis 1.16, “Then God made two great lights: the greater
light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night.” I do not think
I am going out on a limb when I say the Sun is the most powerful object made by
God. Indeed without the Sun, life here on earth or any where else would be
impossible. The Sun is the center of our universe. It contains 98% of the mass in our
solar system with a surface temperature of 11,000 degrees Fahrenheit. It is said
to contain enough energy to last 5 billion years. (All information came from
www.solarviews.com). The earth and 8 other planets rotate around the Sun (if you include Pluto).
It is our rotation around the Sun that gives us our days, seasons, and
years. It is the light from the Sun that warms our planet and makes life
possible. We depend on this light so we can see, to grow our crops, and warm us.
However, the key is not just that the Sun exists and is powerful, but the
earth’s relationship to the Sun. Earth is roughly 149,600,000 KM, or
92,957,300 miles, from the Sun. If
the earth was 10 million miles closer to the Sun it would be too hot to sustain
life. If the earth was 10 million miles farther from the Sun, it would be too
cold for life to exist. If our speed of rotation around the Sun slowed by half,
our seasons would be lengthened to the point that it would be almost impossible
for vegetation to survive. If the earth’s rotation around the Sun increased,
then the length of our seasons would be reduced and it would be hard for crops
to come to maturity. If the earth’s daily rotation was reduced, the side
facing the Sun would burn up and the side in darkness would freeze over. The point is that life not only depends on the Sun and its power, but the
earth’s relationship to the Sun. There are seven other planets in our solar
system, but they are either too close, Mercury is 57,910 km and too hot, or too
far way, Pluto is 5,913,520,000 km away and a ball of ice. Mars is the planet
that comes the closest to duplicating the earth’s relationship to the Sun is
227,940,000 km away from the Sun, but not able to sustain life. It is the
precision of our relationship to the Sun that makes earth the only place in our
solar system for life to exist. There is another “Son” we need to understand. The Son of God is more
powerful than the physical Sun, for He was the one that created the Sun. Genesis
1 tells us that God spoke the Sun into existence. The power of God is so great
that simply by speaking, the universe and all it contains was created. John 1.14
tells us the “Word became flesh.” Earlier John tells us the “Word’s”
part in the creation. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.
All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made
that was made” (John 1.1-3, emphasis mine D.T.). Without the Son, man would not be able to see the will of God. “I must
work the words of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no
one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world” (John
9.4-5). Jesus came to reveal the will of God to man. He did so through the
miracles, His example, and His word. Without the Son, we would not know how to
be saved. We would be in darkness. Without the Son, we would not have spiritual life. “I have come that they
may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10.10). Jesus
was not speaking of physical life because these people were alive
physically speaking. Therefore, He was speaking about being alive spiritually.
The Son died on the cross so we can be saved. The Son is the center and cornerstone of God’s plan for man’s
redemption. “He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the
firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence”
(Colossians 1.18). Due to His
very nature, Jesus has all authority over the entire creation. However, we must have the proper relationship to the Son, if we are going to
be spiritually alive. We can either be like the earth and the proper
relationship to the Sun or we can be like the other planets in our solar system
and be dead. Many passages in the Bible teach that we must do the will of the
Father that is in heaven, Matthew 7.21ff, obey the Son, Hebrews 5.9. He must
become the center of our Universe. As the Apostle Paul said, “I have been
crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and
the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who
loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2.20). Do you have Sonlight in
your life? If not we hope you will submit to His will and do what the Bible
says. —Dennis Tucker |
