Think About It

It was a pretty basic sermon. The message was salvation from sin, a new focus for life, the promise of heaven… many of us have heard it many times before.

But sitting next to me was someone who only came to services a few times a year. I noticed his restlessness as the preacher spoke of the wages of sin. He was quieter as he heard about Jesus and the price He paid for our transgressions. He seemed to be staring at the floor, deep in thought, as he listened to the hope of a better life in Christ. He raised his head and looked intently at the preacher as he closed his lesson with comments about grace and a home in heaven.

"If there is anyone here today who hasn’t yet accepted Christ," the preacher said, "we’d like to offer you this opportunity…" Suddenly a stir swept through the congregation! Many slid songbooks noisily from the racks. A mother near us began to gather her child’s toys. Members uncrossed their legs, coughed, sat forward, noisily zipped up their Bible covers… One member chose that moment to walk out.

The man beside me looked away from the preacher, looked at the commotion around him, and he too shifted in his seat. I didn’t hear much of the fervent plea of that young preacher for a lost soul to respond to the call for salvation. And neither did the unsaved man beside me. He died shortly after this… still unsaved. He was my husband.

Please! Think about it! I do… —taken from the Palmetto Church of Christ Study Bulletin, by David Beck.
