2 Kings & Christ

Introduction: Through out the Old Testament there is the theme of looking forward to the Messiah. In 1 Kings the nation divided into the Northern Kingdom (Israel) and Southern Kingdom (Judah). In 2 Kings we see the eventual demise of both kingdoms. This book is filled with interesting events and lessons but we want to concentrate on the kings of both kingdom, the prophets, and its place in the coming of Christ.

B) Kings of Israel were all evil, common term to describe them, 1 Kings 22:52

"walked in the way of his father and in the way of his mother and in the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin;"

2. Baasha killed all the house of Jeroboam, 1 Kings 15

3. Zimri killed all the house of Baasha, 1 Kings 16.11

4. Omri killed Zimri, 1 Kings 16.

5. Jehu ended the lineage of Ahab, 2 Kings 10.11

6. Later years the kings are mere vassals of Assyria.

C) Kings of Judah

1. The lineage of David was preserved end through the bad kings.

2. Many kings were compared to David -- 1 Kings 15:11, "Asa did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, as did his father David."

3. God did not destroy Judah for the sake of David, 2 Kings 8.19

4. Bad kings were said to walk in the ways of Israel referring to idolatry.

5. Josiah tried major reforms but could not reform the heart of the people.

6. Uzziah started out good but turned bad; Manasseh was bad but turned out doing good.

D) Prophets

1. Northern Kingdom had Elijah, Elisha, Hosea, Amos, and Jonah

2. Southern Kingdom had Isaiah, Jeremiah, Micah, Joel, Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah

E) The End of Judah and A Time of Promise

1. When Judah became apostate the glory of the Lord depart the temple. 2.The temple was destroyed and never again would one of the lineage of David role on his throne in Jerusalem.

3. God preserved the lineage of David and promised to bring a remnant back from captivity that would follow Him.

a. Athaliah killed all of Ahaziah’s lineage except for Joash, a one year old child. Jehosheba saved his life, 2 Kings 11.2

4. God promised to establish a new law and a new kingdom. We have that in Christ today.

F) In a time of despair and gloom they spoke of Christ.

Micah spoke of the birth place

Jeremiah spoke of a New Covenant

Isaiah spoke of the law of God going forth from Zion

Joel spoke of whoever calls on the name of the Lord

Jonah was in the belly three days and nights, pointing toward Christ
