7 Deadly Sins Introduction:
Proverbs 6.16-19 gives us 7 things
which Solomon calls abominations to the Lord. These all have to do with one’s
relationship to others and might we summed up with the number seven (perfect,
complete, whole). These are seven sins people do. In Luke
12.1-15 we have another list of seven sins. Perhaps not as closely tied
together, but equally deadly nonetheless. Jesus warns us away from… A)
Hypocrisy, v. 1 1.
Not speaking of trying and failing, Proverbs 24.14
a) This is where
we have to be careful of how we judge others.
b. They may be trying and need our prayers, patience, and to grow. 2.
Not speaking of making an effort when one’s heart is not in it
a. 2 Corinthians 1.8-9; 2.3 Paul had to do things when he may not of
felt like doing it.
b. We may find it hard to deal with our brethren because it is not
pleasant, but we do it. 3.
Speaking of the sin of acting, Matthew 23.13ff
a. Five of the 7 woes are connected to hypocrisy
b. Verse 14 pretend prayers – not meaning what we are saying
c. Verse 23 “Use” God’s law for one’s own purposes
d. Verse 25 Hide your heart
e. Verse 27 focus on the outer man and not our spirit or character
f. Verse 29ff talk a good show but no follow through B)
Secret Sin(s), v. 2 1.
Secrecy is an imagination of men, God knows all we do. The fact is a lot of
people figure out what we are doing.
a. A drunkard may think he is hiding his drinking but others know.
b. Parents usually figure out what their children are up to.
c. Lady at Medical Clinic for years was ordering prescription pain
medicine, but she was caught. 2.
Ephesians 5.11-13; Psalm 90.8 secrets come to light
a. Romans
2.16 secrets are going to be judged
b. 1 Corinthians 4.5 secrets are going to be disclosed.
c. Remember a story where a person has a dream and the dream is about the
day of Judgment. He is in a room with all kinds of files. The
files are all the things he did in his life. Each moment, each thought,
each activity, each word, is recorded. C)
Whispering, verse 3 (Proverbs 26.20-24) 1.
Stirs up strife, hurts people’s reputations, people feel betrayed, goes from
bad to worse, disguises hatred. 2.

Peer Pressure, v. 4 ; Exodus 23.2 1.
A lot of people do things because they follow the crowd. Herd mentality or mob
rule takes over and they do all kinds of things they should not.

riots where people stole, hurt others
b. Hard to be different and stand out from the crowd – using
profanity, drinking, etc. Romans

c. The rebellion
of Korah, Numbers 16.2ff 2.
But it does not make sin right, 2 Corinthians 5.10 E)
Fear, verses 4-5 1.
Will leads us to the second death, Revelation 21.8 2.
It is tied to death, Hebrews 2.14-15 3.
It can be overcome, 2 Corinthians 7.5-6 4.
By faith and love, 1 John 4.18 F)
Rejecting God, verse 9-10 1.
Can be accomplished in a variety of ways.
a. By saying
“later” when I get around to it, being too “busy”, wanting to know more,
discounting what we need to do, simply saying “no” to God. 2.

Covetousness, verses 13-15 1.
Desiring what belong to another
a. “Every form
of greed”
b. See this in gambling as people gamble to win that does not
belong to them. That is why so many states have the lottery and other
types of gambling, they know people will gamble. 2.
It is idolatry, Colossians 3.5
a. A covetous
person will place what they desire above God, their family, or anyone else.
b. They will even hard themselves. Conclusion:
God will hold us accountable for all we do. We need to make sure we are living
