Angels?, Are There Guardian

Psalm 91.7-13

Introduction: In the first lesson we learned that angels are spiritual being created by God. There are not deity, people that passed away, or our source of authority. The second lesson we learned that angels are lower than God and higher then man. They are ministering Spirits. Often God spoke through the angles, i.e. the burning bush, on Mount Sinai in the giving of the Law. Angels as servants of God executed His judgment, directed people, offered assurance, revealed God’s will, and will separate the righteous and unrighteous on the Day of Judgment.

In this lesson we want to look at the subject of “Guardian Angels.”

I) Guardian Angels

A) Matthew 18.10 goes not specifically speak of “Guardian Angels”

1. “Their angels in heaven”

2. “in heaven their angels”

3. Points out the fact that angels in heaven see the Father’s face.

4. They see what is going on in heaven and earth.

5.  Consistent with Hebrews 12.1 where we have a great cloud of witnesses in heaven.

B) Term “Guardian Angel” is not found in the Bible

1. Does not by itself rule out what people mean by their use of the term.

2. Leads to question of what is meant by the term “Guardian Angels”

II) Defining What People Mean

A) Angels guard over or minister to God’s people in accordance to His will.

B) Angels are assigned a specific person to watch over and such watching will be in accordance to God’s word.

C) Angels are assigned a specific person to watch over in special ways. In addition to God’s word.

1. People will receive additional revelation.

2. Miraculous intervention.

III) What People Believe And Why

A) Majority of people believe they have a Guardian Angel

1. Sept 18, 2008 Time Magazine results

            a. 55 % said they had received protection from harm by a guardian angel

            b. This belief was not confined to one particular religious group such as Pentecostals, African-         American denominations,          “experiential churches” and Catholics.

2. Most said they believed such because of “personal experiences”

            a. “I heard the voice of God speaking to me”

            b. “I received a miraculous physical healing”

            c. Mother saved from falling off a cliff by two men that then vanished

            d. Saved by someone ringing the door bell in the middle of the night when the house was on       fire.

B) Various religions teach there are guardian angels

1. Jews believed in guardian angels but they also believe other things that we not so about angels, John 5.9

2. Catholic Church has the feast of the Guardian Angel.

3. Resulting in the worshipping of angels, Colossians 2.18

IV) Angels Guarded Godly People in the Bible

A) Daniel in the lions den, Daniel 6.16-22

1. This was a miraculous event attributed to God

B) Protected Judah from Assyria in 2 Kings 19.35

1. This protection required their enemies be destroyed.

2. Why is it people don’t attribute deaths to guardian angels?

C) Delivered Peter in Acts 12.

V) Principles To Keep In Mind

A) Angels and Christians today, Hebrews 1.14

1. They rejoice when sinners repent and turn back to God, Luke 15.10

2. Matthew 18.1-10 Jesus using children to illustrate what we have to become.

            a. Children in the 1st century had no rights but were simply pieces of property.

            b. Who ever causes a person in such a lowly position to sin will be in danger of condemnation.

            c. Their angels in heaven see their Fathers face. Main focus is not on the angels but God’s concern for His people.

B) God is not concerned with our physical condition but spiritual well being

1. Romans 8.31-32 God did everything to bring about our salvation.

2. God employees His angels in our protection and salvation, Psalm 34.7

C) Guardian Angels can not:

1. Reveal anything new or different to use today then what we already have, 2 Peter 1.3; Galatians 1.8ff

2. Will not interfere with our free will

            a. They can not protect you from yourself

            b. Will not cause  you to not suffer for your actions.

D) This does not rule out God using angels with Divine providence.

1. God answers prayers in His way and with His means

2. Rules our miraculous intervention.

Conclusion: Some believe in personal indwelling of Holy Spirit and others do not. Those that do often breakdown into two camps. One that believes the personal indwelling gives people special revelation and direct. The second does not believe in special revelation and everything we need is in the Bible. What the Holy Spirit does in the indwelling is not really defined for the second group. Some believe in guardian angels and others do not. Those that do breaks down into two camps. The first that they receive special revelation and direction. The second says the guardian angels must work in harmony with the Bible. No special revelation or miraculous intervention. We all can agree that there are angels, they watch over us, and help us in harmony with God’s word. The Bible does not say we have a guardian angel assigned to each of us.

We are told to listen to His Son and follow His word, Hebrews 1.1-2.
