Christianity Is Outside the Box #3

In this series of articles, we are briefly noticing how true Christianity differs from human perception of religion. Religion and "Christianity" specifically has gotten a bad rap. It is seen as being too formal, void of emotion, and too organized. Earlier articles have tried to show that what is being passed off for religion today is not what we see in the Bible. Continuing, we want to notice another way that "Christianity is Outside the Box."

One difference is in the use of titles; Pastor, Reverend, Pope, His Excellency, Father, Minister, and others are used in religion. These men may wear types of clothing to identify themselves as being "religious leaders"; a white collar, a black robe, etc. That is because most people believe there is a clergy/laity system in the Bible. Most people seem to think that their preacher/pastor has some kind of information that they do not have.

This is not new to religion, as the Jews used labels such as "Teacher", and "Rabbi" to elevate their scholars. They also changed their clothing to call special attention to themselves and Jesus told them to stop! "But you do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren. Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ" (Matthew 23.8-10).

The point is there is no clergy/laity system in Christ. All Christians are part of the royal priesthood, 1 Peter 2.9. We can approach our God in prayer without having to go to a "priest" or some other "man of the cloth." Jesus is our High Priest and all of us are equal in the Kingdom of God. Terms such as, Father, Reverend, Pastor, etc. should not be use to distinguish a "preacher" from a member of Christ’s body. We are all equal; all Christians are to be teachers, priest, servants, ministers, and holy people, see I Peter 2.9. Don’t fall into the box of titles or the clergy/laity system; instead follow the teaching of Christ. D.T.
