Commonly Misinterpreted/Misapplied Scriptures #2 Introduction: We continue our study of some misinterpreted/misapplied scriptures. I) 1 Corinthians 1.17 Paul Was Not Sent To Baptize A) Common idea is that baptism is not necessary for one to be save. 1. If baptism was essential then Paul would not have written this. 2. We have to realize that if Paul is condemning baptism; then all forms of baptism are wrong. B) Facts 1. 1 Corinthians 1.11-13 we must recognize the problem at Corinth, they were denominationalizing the church. a. Some were being baptized and then using the name of Paul, or Cephas, or Apollos. b. They were being hyphenated Christians. 2. Paul is condemning factions in the body of Christ, 1 Corinthians 1.10; 2.16. a. We are Christians and nothing more or less. b. Anything more or less is wrong. 3. Paul did baptize people at Corinth, vv. 14-15,16 4. Paul preached the Gospel, v. 17 5. The gospel included baptism, Acts 18.4-11. a. Peter preached repentance and baptism in Acts 2. b. Philip preached Jesus to the Eunuch in Acts 8 and the Eunuch was baptize, Acts 8.35-37. 6. Paul preached about baptism, Acts 16.14-15 7. Paul was glad he had not baptized more because of their divisiveness. II) 1 Corinthians 2.9 A) Common idea – this passage is speaking of heaven 1. It is true that we can only imagine the glory of heaven, Revelation 21.10ff 2. All we know about heaven is revealed by God to man. B) Context says Paul is speaking of the revelation of God’s will 1. The Gospel was not discovered but revealed by inspiration, 2 Timothy 3.16 2. Various passages that points out that the plan of God for man’s salvation was even unknown to the angels, 1 Peter 1.10-13 a. See 1 Corinthians 1.22-27 to see how the Jews and Greeks viewed the gospel. b. 1 Corinthians 1.7-8 is more specific. 3. The human mind did not come up with the Gospel and its blessings. III) 1 Corinthians 11.27-29 Eating the bread and drinking the cup unworthily (unworthy manner) A) Common idea- one must not sin or if I think I have sinned, I can not eat the Lord’s Supper 1. This puts the emphasis on us instead of Christ. 2. I am to be thinking and examining MY life. a. I have known brethren to even think this refers to the church B) Context deals with the abuse of the Lord’s Supper at Corinth 1. They were making it a common meal, festival, 1 Corinthians 11.20-22. 2. Why do we eat? VV. 23-26 it is a memorial 3. Manner is the process of taking, how one partakes 4. We should be thinking Jesus’ sacrifice and not ourselves. IV) 2 Corinthians 6.14 Be not unequally yoked together A) Common idea – a Christian can not marry an unbeliever 1. Based on the fact that a marriage is a binding together, Matthew 19.5-6 2. Raises the question: What is the remedy if it is a sin? 1 Corinthians 7.12 a. If the marriage in unscriptural then repentance demands leaving. b. However leaving violates 1 Corinthians 7.12 B) Context is seen in verses 14-16 1. Christians are not to have "fellowship" with false religions, vv. 16-17 a. This means to not go in to their temples, partake of their sacrifices 2. Marriage to an unbeliever is not mentioned. V) 2 Peter 1.20-21 No scripture is of private interpretation A) Common idea – the common person can not understand the Bible 1. Must be a priesthood we go to for information and understanding of the Bible. 2. Catholics have their priest and Pope, Protestants have their scholars. B) Facts – interpretation refers to the origin of the scriptures and not the meaning 1. VV. 16-19 the Holy Spirit revealed the scriptures to the prophets and Apostles.
