Conflicting Voices 1 Kings 12.25-33 I) Background A) Jeroboam had been promised by God a portion of the Kingdom. 1. Ten tribes would follow Jeroboam due to the idolatry caused by Solomon, 1 Kings 11. 2. He was encouraged to walk in the ways of God and he would prosper. B) Jeroboam instituted false religion 1. Changed the place of worship from Jerusalem to Dan and Bethel 2. Created a false priesthood, not the Levites 3. This lead Northern Israel into further idolatry and away from God. II) The Obedient Prophet From Judah A) He was sent by God, 1 Kings 13.1 1. He knew the difference between true worship and false worship. 2. If it is not true it must by definition be false. B) This man spoke by the authority of God, v. 2 1. His message was confirmed by prophecy (v.2) fulfilled in 2 Kings 23.19ff; and miracles (vv. 3-5) 2. This prophet showed total obedience to God, v. 8 3. He was honest and sincere. III) The Conflicting Voices A) Jeroboam was a powerful king 1. He tried flattery and bribery (If you can’t beat them they buy them) vv. 6-7 2. The prophet was not tempted, vv. 8-9. This may have been too obvious. B) An Old Prophet 1. He appeared to have been impressed by the message and sincerity of the young prophet, vv. 11-15 2. He claimed to be speaking by the authority of the Lord also, vv. 18a a. Was he really speaking for God? Was the way of truth obscured? V. 17 3. He lied and caused the young prophet to disobey God, v. 18b IV) The Prophet of Judah Was Punished A) Killed by a lion as God’s punishment, v. 24 B) The old prophet lied and yet he blamed the younger prophet for his death, v. 26 C) There seems to be a sense of sadness and remorse, vv. 27-31 but it did not change what had happened. V) Lessons To Learn A) Stick to what we know is right 1. The message of the old prophet was not confirmed, only claimed. 2. The young prophet was presumptuous, Ps. 19.13 3. Every false religion will have its false prophets and teachers, 1 John 4.1 4. Today we have the Bible, Romans 15.4 B) Authority is not established by… 1. Our passions or feelings, 1 Corinthians 4.6 2. Personal opinions, private interpretations, Colossians 2.8 C) Disobedience in one area makes us guilt of the whole law, James 2.10 1. Look at all the good things the young prophet had done; but he was guilty. D) We must stay with the truth and reject false teaching, Galatians 1.6-9 Conclusion: We must respect and listen to the voice of God. D.T. @ Westside Church of Christ 12.02.07 |
