Dealing With People

(Grumpy/Rude)

Introduction: If everybody was as loveable as you and I, we would have no “personality issues.” Yet most of us are not perfect and we have to deal with different issues in life. Let me suggest that your success at personal relationship depends not as much on what others are doing but on you.

We want to study what the Bible says about dealing with grumpy people and/or rude people.

I) Grumpy People

A) Will Ferrell in the movie “Elf” – you must be a grumpy elf.

1, What is grumpiness? Short tempered, irritable, anti-social.

2. A grumpy person is not pleasant to be around and affects those around them.

3. Grumpiness is caused by something.

            a. Health problems

            b. Mental anguish, depression

            c. Sin

            d. Anger or disappointment

B) A grumpy Christian needs to take care of their problem, Phil. 2.12-15; 4.8,9, 12,13.

1. Stop complaining, change your attitude, be thankful for what you have.

2. Remember what a bad day is really like.

C) Dealing with a grumpy person

1. Try talking to them, shows you care

2. Point out the way they are, perhaps they don’t realize it

3. Try to understand what they are going through

4. Give time and space, stay away from (boss, friend, neighbor)

5. Have Donna Jones to talk to them – you just need to buck up buddy.

6. Do not retaliate or allow them to make you grumpy.

D) Dealing with a grumpy spouse (husband/wife)

1.  Ephesians 4.1-3

            a. Walk worthy of the call you were called – remember who and what you      are. It is not what they are but what you are.

            b. Have the right attitude: lowliness of mind, gentleness, longsuffering.

            c. Bearing with one anther in love. Why is it we often have less patience and            forbearance with our spouses then we do others?

            d. Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit – work at it.

2. Ephesians 5.25, 28, 32a directed to the husband

            a. If you are not treating your spouse right then you are not walking worthy   of the calling in which you were called; not with lowliness of mind, or     gentleness, or longsuffering.

            b. Your prayers will be hindered, 1 Peter 3.7

3. Ephesians 5.22, 33b directed toward the wife

            a. Wife’s responsibility does not change if her husband is grumpy or not, 1 Peter 3.1-6.

            b. The question is not whether you can change them but how you act           toward them. Romans 12.17-21

4. Follow the example of Christ, 1 Peter 2.21-23

II) Dealing With Rude People

A) Rudeness – impolite, discourteous, bad-manner, disrespectful, etc.

1. We live in a rude society where people feel like they can say whatever they want, do what ever they want, whenever they want.

2. Judges shows us a people that were rude and sinful. The reason for all their problems was them forsaking their God. Judges 2.11,12

            a. There was no standard of right and wrong, Judges 21.25

            b. Are we any different today?

3. Consider the Proverbs 30.11-14 a generation that mistreats is own family members, say unkind things about others, self centered, self righteous, etc.

B) What we are to do?

1. Teach our children to treat others kindly. Love your neighbor, Matthew 22.37-40

2. Be a light to those around us, Matthew 5.13-14

3. Remember the Golden Rule, Matthew 7.12

4. Love your enemies, Matthew 5.43-48

C) What about rude brethren? Matthew 5.22-26

1. Some times people do rude things without thinking about it. Don’t have your heart on your sleeve.

2. Some times we may think some thing is rude and just be overly sensitive.

3. If something is rude and sinful then it needs to be dealt with in a manner that is lovingly and yet adequate, Galatians 6.1.

Conclusion: Really the principles we have studied tonight applies to those that are lazy, or selfish, etc. Remember we are to fulfill our responsibilities no matter  how others treat  us.
