Exodus & Christ
Introduction: Genesis ends with the death of Joseph. Exodus continues the history of Jacob’s family, 215 years later. 1) Exodus 1 a) Genesis 47.27 ends with the family of Israel in the land of Goshen tending to their herds. i) They were prospering and separated from the Egyptians, Exodus 1.7 some estimated Israel to have been well over a million people by this time. ii) In the mean time a new Pharaoh came into power, one that did not know Joseph or his family. Exodus 1.8 iii) Acts 7.17-19 some believe Egypt was over taken by outsiders hence a change in the government. b) Israel afflicted i) The Egyptians were afraid of them, vv. 9.10 ii) Israelites were in bondage, v. 11 iii) Pharaoh ordered the death of the Hebrew male babies, v. 22 2) Exodus 2 a) Moses first 40 years i) Moses mother hid him for three months and then placed him in an ark and set his adrift on the river,2.3 ii) Pharaoh’s daughter hired his mother to nurse the child and rear him, v. 9 iii) Pharaoh’s daughter found the baby and named him Moses, v. 10 b) Moses second 40 years i) Moses brought up in Pharaoh’s household until he killed a slave master, Acts 7.23-30 ii) Goes to land of Midian and become a shepherd, marries Zipporah, and has children. 3) Exodus 3 on covers the beginning of the last forty years of Moses’ life a) God speaks to Moses on Mount Sinai, Chapter 3 i) God heard the cries and prayers of Israel, v. 7 ii) Moses to go back to bring Israel out of Egypt iii) God identifies himself, vv. 14-16 b) Chapters – 12 Moses in Egypt i) Ten Plagues (1) Water turned into blood, 7.14ff (2) Frogs – 8.1-5 (3) Lice – 8.16-19 (4) Flies – 8.20-32 (5) Livestock Diseased – 9.1-7 (6) Boils – 9.8-12 (7) Hail – 9.13-35 (8) Locust – 10.1-20 (9) Darkness – 10. 21-29 (10) Death of the firstborn – 11.1 – 12.30 ii) Each plague was to prove the existence and power of God iii) Each plague would have brought economic hardships and suffering on the Egyptians. iv) Nine times Pharaoh hardened his heart to not obey God. v) The 10 th plague caused Pharaoh to let Israel go.c) Israel leaves Egypt, 12.31 i) Parting of the Red Sea and destruction of Egypt’s army, 14.1-15 ii) Mount Sinai and the giving of the Law, 19.1ff (v.8) d) End of the Patriarchal Dispensation and the Beginning of the Mosaic i) Exodus the 10 Commandments ii) Moses on Mount Sinai for 40 days, Ex. 24.9-10, (vv. 7-8) iii) Israel worships the Golden calf, Ex. 32 e) Exodus 25ff i) The making of the Tabernacle, establishment of the High Pries and the priesthood, offerings, etc. ii) God enters the Tabernacle, Exodus 40.34-38 4) Christ In Exodus a) Type and Anti-type (Moses and Christ) i) Moses sent by God to deliver Israel from bondage in Egypt – Christ sent by God to deliver mankind for the bondage of sin, Romans 6.21-23 ii) Moses a prophet – Christ the prophet, John 6.14 iii) Moses interceded for Israel – Christ lives to intercede for us, Hebrews 7.25 iv) Moses a servant was faithful – Jesus the Son was faithful, Hebrews 3.2-3 b) The Passover and The Lord’s Supper i) Passover lamb was to be a male lamb, one year old, and without blemish – Jesus is our Passover lamb (John 1.29) without blemish (sin) ii) Not a bone was to be broken – Not a bone of Jesus was broken, John 19.36 iii) Unleavened break for Israel had to leave in a hurry – unleavened bread which is the body of Christ, Matthew 26.26 iv) Fruit of the vine – is the blood of Christ, the blood of the New Covenant, Matthew 26.28 c) The Tabernacle and the church i) Dwelling place of God – the church is the dwelling place of God, 1 Corinthians 6.19 d) Law of Moses – ratified and the people sprinkled with the blood of animals – The Law of Christ – ratified with the blood of Christ and we are washed in His blood, Eph. 1.7 Conclusion: God did not forget His promises to Abraham. In Exodus Israel starts to become a nation, move toward Canaan, and God’s special people. In Christ we are God’s holy and special people. |
