FATHER

 Defining A Godly Man

Introduction: Often we speak of the changing role of women in our society. Working outside the home, being more assertive, more independent, etc. are some of the changes that has affected women, their husbands, and their children. However, the role of men has also changed. Movies such as Mr. Mom depicted the man staying home and the wife earning the living. Some roles needed to be redefined but others do not. I want to study some qualifies a godly man will have with the acronym FATHER.

  1. F – is for faith.
    1. A knowledge of God’s word and the conviction to follow that word
    2. The faith to be different than most men around us, Romans 12.1ff
    3.  Not to use profanity, drink, chase woman, shirk their responsibility.
    4. Society has made it easy for a man to have children without the commitment of marriage, leave his children for society to take care of, go crazy and call it a "mid-life crisis"
    5. The faith to honor the marriage relationship he enters into
    6. Remember those vows "To honor, cherish, protect, until death do us part" -- Ephesians 5.25, 28-29
    7. To not treat her like one of the boys but like the love of your life, 1 Peter 3.7.
    8. To provide for her and your children, 1 Timothy 5.8.
    9. The faith to follow God’s word will make you a better man, a better husband, and a better father. What would our country be like if every father was a man of faith?
  2. A –action in actually doing what the Bible teaches.

    2. A person that does not implement the Bible in their life is not a Christian, James 1.22-25.
    3. A man can talk about being godly and study the subject but what is needed is the actions of a godly man.
    4. Abraham led his family in the ways of God, Genesis 18.19.
    5. Job was the spiritual leader of his family, Job 1.5.
    6. What would this congregation be like if every man in it was as spiritually minded and active as you?
    7. In prayer, teaching, study, worship, etc.
    8. Our young men will follow our example in these areas.
  3. T – teaching others the word of God
    1. God gave the responsibility of teaching to the father, Ephesians 6.4
    2. We teach by our priorities, what is important to us will become important to our children.
    3. By our example – "my boy grew up just like me, yea, my boy grew up to be just like me." – Harry Chapin
    1. o We need to be more concerned about our children’s spiritual well being than their grades at school.
    2. o What would the church be like if every man taught their families like you?
  1.  H – holiness in conduct
    1. Look around and see how many men are here this morning. Why is it women tend to out number the men?
