God’s Plan for Man: The Kingdom of Christ

Introduction: God has revealed His will to man in the Bible.

There are various lessons concerning God’s plan for man.

God wants man to obey His word; to be redeemed from sin in Christ.

In this lesson we want to see God’s Plan for Man: In the Kingdom.

I) What is a kingdom?

A) Refers to an area of domain

1. We read of the kingdoms of men. King of Babylon had dominion over a geographical area.

The same can be said for the United States.

B) A kingdom has ruler or law giver

1. Dictatorship has one man that has authority to establish his law.

2. Representative government has legislators that will establish laws and change its laws.

C) A law

1. Requires enforcement, the executive branch of our government exist to enforce the laws of this country.

2. The laws of men are often temporary, limited to those under its jurisdiction.

D) Citizens

II) The Kingdom of Israel

A) Set up by God at Mount Sinai

1. God’s Holy Nation, was Israel

B) God was its ruler, its King, I Samuel 8.7

C) The law was given at Mount Sinai, Exodus 32

1. Ratified by the blood of bulls and goats, Exodus 24

D) They were given the land of Canaan.

II) Prophecies of the Kingdom

A) 2 Samuel 7.13‐14

1. David was already ruling Israel so this prophesy was not concerning Israel.

2. One of David’s lineage would rule over the kingdom yet to be established.

B) Daniel 2.32‐ 35, 44

1. The time of this kingdom would be during the fourth kingdom of man.

a. First kingdom was the Babylonian Empire

b. Second kingdom was the Medo‐Persian Empire

c. Third kingdom was the Greek Empire with Alexander the Great

d. The fourth kingdom was the Roman Empire

2. Therefore, it was God’s Plan for the Kingdom to be established during the days of the Roman Empire

3. Jesus was born during the Roman Empire, Matthew 2 & Luke 3 reveals the birth of Jesus during the Roman Empire.

C) It would not be limited by geographical boundaries

1. Most kingdoms cover a land mass and are limited to that land mass

2. However, this kingdom would not be limited or outlined on a map.

3. Example: Bobby Knight and Puerto Rico, if he ever returns he will be arrested but as long as he stays out of there he will be OK.

D) It would be an "everlasting kingdom"

1. The kingdoms of men come and go, this kingdom would not be conquered by another but would outlast the kingdoms of men

2. It will come to an end only at the end of this world, 1 Corinthians 15.24‐27

III) The Kingdom in The New Testament

A) Terms used in the New Testament

1. Kingdom of heaven is used primarily in Matthew, in many of the parables.

2. Kingdom of God is used in Mark and the rest of the Gospels, many of the same parables as given in Matthew’s Gospel.

a. Therefore, the kingdom of heaven and kingdom of God are the same kingdom.

b. What is true for one kingdom is true for the other.

3. Kingdom of His dear Son, Colossians 1.13.

4. Kingdom of Christ and of God, Ephesians 5.5

B) It is a spiritual kingdom, Luke 17.20‐21

1. Jesus said His kingdom would not be "of this world" John 18.36

2. Later on Paul said the kingdom was not physical in appearance or emphasis, Romans 14.17

3. Not interested in gaining land mass or wealth, but in serving God.

4. Not spread through armies and physical battles but through preaching and teaching.

C) The Establishment of the Kingdom

1. Was about to be set up, Matthew 3.1‐2; 4.17

a. Was not set up before the birth of Jesus

b. Was not set up while Jesus was here upon earth.

2. Mark 9.1 would be set up during the life time of those people

3. Was established on the Day of Pentecost, Acts 2.33,36

a. Based upon Jesus’ power in overcoming sin and death

D) Jesus is the Ruler, the one with all authority, Matthew 28.18ff

1. It is by His name we act and move, Psalm 2

a. The Gospel, the law of Christ is the will of God and Christ for man today.

b. 1 Peter 4.11 we are to speak as the oracles of God

2. It is by His name we are baptized for the remission of sins, Acts2.38

3. It is by His law we can act with authority,

a. Many are willing to accept Jesus as their Savior but not as their Lord and King.

b. To accept Jesus was must accept His authority and be subject to His word, 1 Timothy 6.15

4. Make no mistake about it, Jesus is an active King today, Isaiah 9.6

a. He rules in heaven above, at the right hand of God

b. His word is bidding us today just as it was in the first century.

E) Those inside the kingdom

1. Enter through their acceptance of Jesus as the Son of God and submission to His will, Romans 10.9; Acts 2.38

2. Understand this kingdom we enter as we submit to the will of its King, Jesus. He has all authority and power, Matthew 28.18ff.

2. Are serving as priest and kings, Revelation 1.5‐6

3. Will be delivered up to God when Christ comes again, 1 Corinthians 15.24ff

Conclusion: The kingdom of Christ was predestined by God. It covers all of this earth.

There is not a place you can go to escape the authority of Christ.

When Christ comes back those that are faithful and have obeyed the voice of God will go to heaven.

Those living in rebellion will be lost, Acts 4.12.
