Introduction: God spoke of a time when a remnant would return from captivity and rebuild Jerusalem, Isaiah 44.28. 

In 536 BC Cyrus allows the Jews to return, Ezra 1.1‐4; 2.1‐2a. 

At that time Zerubbabel takes about 50,000 people back to Canaan. 

After 7 months they had restored the altar and offered their sacrifices. 

Two years and 2 months after returning they laid the foundation of the temple, Ezra 3.8. 

For the next 16 years they did nothing to the temple, Ezra 4.1‐4, 24; 5.16.

 In 520 BC God sends Haggai and Zechariah with a plain and simple message (Get to Work and Build the Temple of The Lord).  

1. Their response; it is not yet time.  

 a. Could have been thinking of the 70 years of captivity and the last group was not taken off the land until 589 BC. 

So they needed to wait longer.  

 b. Probably they were busy and were simply saying, we just don’t have time yet.  

 c.  Think of Felix in Acts 24.25 "when I have a convenient time I will call for you." 

2. Why had they had the time to build houses of luxury? V. 4 

 a. God knows the difference between a reason and an excuse.  

 b. We find time to do things that interest us or we think is really important.  

1. Experiencing: bad harvest, not enough to drink, lack of wool, not enough money.  

2. God tells them to "Consider your ways!" v. 7 

3. They needed to put first things first, v 8 

4. What came first? 

 a. Build the temple and glorify God, Ecc. 12.13; Matthew 6.33 

 b. Their neglect of God brought on their problems, vv. 10.11 

 c. They had failed in the business of life because they had failed in their duty to God 

1. They people obeyed the voice of the Lord, they feared the Lord.  

2.  Important to notice the number of times Haggai mentions the Lord; 

showing the source and authority of the message.  

3. Resulting in the spirit of the people being stirred up; they worked on the house of the Lord.  

1. One group cried and the other shouted for joy, when they the foundation of the temple, Ezra3.12 

2. The glory of the temple was not its size or materials but the presence of the Lord, vv. 4‐9 

1. Jesus pointed out that He would build His church 

2. Therefore, a greater temple will be established, 1 Corinthians 6.19‐20 

3. Has a greater foundation (1 Corinthians 3.11); with greater blessings (Ephesians 1.22‐23) 

1. The lesson on being clean and unclean, Numbers 19.22 

2. By touching something unclean they became unclean and had to be cleansed.

To be holy and clean they had to live holy and stay away from the unclean.  

3. To be holy we must turn to the Lord, v. 17 

     a. Just because a man carries a Bible he is not holy.  

     b. Being a Christian is more than simply being baptized it is how we live daily. 

D) A reminder of their past problems, vv. 18‐19 

1. Their harvest was bad because God had not blessed them.  

2. If they obeyed God they would be blessed.  

E) God is in control, vv. 20‐23 

1. He rules over the nations, He promised that Zerubbabel would rebuild the temple.  

III) Application 

A) Are we substituting material goods for the spiritual blessings 

(being like Esau that sells his birthright for a bowl of stew) 

1. Are we busy at building our "panel houses" and indifferent about God’s house? 

2. We have been experiencing great economic times and yet the Lord’s church is declining.  

B) What are we building on the foundation? 

1. Some a building a "new church" with family life centers, gyms, fellowship halls, etc.  

     a. The social gospel does not room for Jesus and the spiritual mission of the church.  

2. Some are not building at all; more and more congregations are doing less and less.  

     a. Cut back on evangelism, edification, benevolence.  

3. Some had defined "soundness" as standing against liberalism instead of building godly lives. 

C) Spiritual blessings comes only from the Lord and is reserved to those actively doing the will of the Lord, 2 Corinthians 9.10‐14 

Conclusion: Haggai mentions the Lord 26 times in 38 verses. God expects us to hear, believe, change,  and continually do His will.
