Hate: From a Biblical Perspecitve

Introduction: We may use the way hate in a number of ways. I hate pop up windows on the computer, spinach, ice storms, waiting in line at the grocery store, school, cleaning house, etc. Hate can be good or bad. I once heard on the radio a person say that Jesus never hated anybody or anything. Was that true? Perhaps the reason people think all with be saved is because we misunderstand the word hate. We want to study hate, hateful, and hatred in this lesson.

A) Hate – of malicious and unjustifiable feeling toward others.

1. Whether toward the innocent or by mutual animosity.

            a. We may simply not like somebody without any real reason.

            b. Jesus said Christians will be hated by those of the world, Matthew   10.22

            i. What harm or reason does the world have to really hate Christians?

ii. To hear some people you would think all the world needs to do is    eradicate Christianity and everybody would be happy.

2. This is exhibited in prejudice, bigotry, and in many crimes.

B) Hate – a right feeling of aversion from what is evil

1. There are some things we hate with a true reason.

2. Used in passages dealing with sin.

            a. Scriptural references: Revelation 2.6 Jesus hated the deeds of the Nicolaitans.

            b. Romans 7.15 Paul hated some of the things he did.

2. We are to hate sin, Proverbs 8.13

            a. To stay away from and abstain from sin, 2 Timothy 2.22

            b. Expose and condemn sin, Ephesians 5.11

3. In this case hate is good: I hate every false way, Psalm 119.128

C) Hate – to lurk, persecute, Genesis 50.15

1. Bible warns us of hating our brother, Lev. 19.17.

2. Wrong to be hateful, Titus 3.3

            a. Jezebel, Herod, Pharaoh, and those that persecuted Jesus.

            b. We are never to treat others hatefully but lovingly, Matthew 5.44

            c. Words associated with hatred; detestable, exceedingly hateful.

3. Other scriptural references: Numbers 35.20, 2 Samuel 13.15

D) Hate – of relative preference for one thing over another

1. To love less {one “thing” over another}, 1 Samuel 1.2,5

            a.  Matthew 6.24 can not serve two master for you will hate one and love the other. We will not be able to love them equally but will    prefer one over the other.

            b. Matthew 5.43 love your neighbor and hate your enemy. Does not   mean and never meant we are to persecute or loath our enemy but to love our enemy less than others.

2. Things we are to hate.

            a. Physical things in relation to spiritual blessings, Mark 8.36

            b. Our physical lives in relation to our soul, John 12.25; Revelation 2.10

            c. Our family in relation to God, Luke 14.26; Matthew 10.32-39

E) That which God hates we are to hate

1. False worship (idolatry), Deut. 12.31

2. Improper worship among with people, Amos 5.21

3. People plotting evil against one another, Zech. 8.17

4. Divorce (abandonment of one’s marriage responsibilities), Malachi 2.16

5. Proverbs 6.16 a proud look, murder, wicked plans, false witness (lying), sowing discord (gossip), and feet that are swift in running to evil.

Conclusion: Godliness requires the proper kind of hate. To stay away from that which is evil and to have the right priorities. Unfortunately people hate God because they love “the wages of sin” more. How about you?
