Healing Of The Paralyzed Man

Luke 5.17-26

Introduction: A miracle is defined as a work performed by a divine power for a divine purpose. The laws of nature are broken in order for the miracle to occur. Miracles were primarily to prove or guarantee the authenticity of revelation, Deut. 18.18-19.

Unfortunately there were times people were more impressed by the miracle than the revelation. I want us to study about the time Jesus healed a man on a bed.

I) Luke 5.18-25; Mark 2.1-12; Matthew 9.2-8

A) The place was Capernaum

1. Nazareth had rejected Him, Luke 4.16,31

2. Capernaum became the adopted city of Jesus , Matthew 9.1

            a. How many miracles and blessings Nazareth could and would have           received if only they were willing?

            b. Jesus came to His own but His own received Him not.

3. Some places will be fertile ground and some will not, Matthew 10.14-15

3. Unfortunately some places are like Capernaum and take the Gospel for granted, Matthew 11.23ff.

B) The crowd

1. People came from Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem

            a. Have to give  people credit for being interested in seeing and        hearing Jesus.

            b. Sad to see people not interested in the Gospel; smaller and smaller           crowds at Gospel Meetings.

2. Would you have been there?

            a. Would you have been there to hear the parable of the Sower?      Matthew 13.2

            b. Would you have been there as Jesus traveled toward Jerusalem ?             Matthew 20.29

            c. Would you have been there to praise Jesus as He entered    Jerusalem ? Matthew 21.8

            d. Would you have been there on Solomon’s porch? Acts 5.12-16

3. Some were skeptical and some were critical.

            a. Scribes, Pharisees, and teachers of the Law were there as well as    common folks. Luke 5.17

4. At the end some charged Jesus with blasphemy, Luke 5.21; while others were receptive, Matthew 9.8, Luke 5.26

C) The friends

1. There were four of them, they carried this man to Jesus.

2. Got past the crowd and let him down through the roof

3. This man was totally dependent on his friends

4. We can help to bring people to Jesus, Romans 10.13-15

            a. We need to be concerned about the spiritual condition of people,           John 4.35

            b. Fields of food will rot if not harvested

5. Some times we are too quick and give up on people, stop inviting them

            a. Ask for Bible studies, invite people to services, handout literature

6. These friends had faith in Jesus; do we have that kind of faith? Matthew 17.20

II) What Jesus Did and Why?

A) Jesus preached the word, Mark 2.2

1. The word of God is what will lead men to salvation

2. We need to be concentrating on the word and not be ashamed of it, Romans 1.16

B) Jesus forgave this man of his sins

1. What good is your health if you are lost?

2. Problem of social gospel is it does not address the greatest need of mankind.

3. Sin is the greatest danger to mankind, Numbers 32.23

            a. Not nuclear waste, auto accidents, cancer, war, pestilence,           global warming, etc.

            b. Sin is what we all have in common

            c. Sin is what separates us from God, Revelation 21.27; 20.14-15, 2 Corinthians 7.1

C) Jesus healed this man

1. Which is easier to say your sins are forgiven or arise and walk?

2. By healing the man Jesus proved He could forgive sins. Luke 5.24-25

3. Jesus is our hope, Romans 5.6

Conclusion: This man got up and walked. How about you? How are you walking? Romans 6.10-12  As we go to Jesus we can walk in newness of life. 2 Corinthians 5.17-19  If you had been that man, the multitude, one of the scribes or Pharisees, what would you have done? What are you doing today?
