The Holy Spirit in the Physical & Spiritual Realm Lesson #2 On the Holy Spirit Introduction:
In the first lesson we saw that the Holy Spirit is not a thing but a person.
Having the attributes of a person in the ability to communicate, to reason, have
a will, and show emotion. The Holy Spirit is part of the Godhead. Having the
attributes of deity but being a separate being from God the Father, and Jesus. In
this lesson we first want to understand the role of the Holy Spirit in creation,
or the physical realm, and apply those principles to the spiritual realm. 1
Corinthians 15.46 and 14.33
shows the physical is first and then followed by the spiritual. We see the Holy
Spirit had a part in the creation. If we understand the Holy Spirit in the
physical creation we can understand Him in the spiritual creation. When studying
the laws of nature we study the laws of God. Nature in action is the Holy Spirit
in action. In the
Physical Creation I)
Godhead in the creation A)
In the creation we see the wisdom, power, and authority of God 1.
“He planned creation and invested his wisdom and power in it; he is the Author
as well as the Creator of “the heavens and the earth.” 2.
In Genesis 1, we read of God’s power to create by speaking into existence what
did not exist before, Psalm 29.4;
Jeremiah 51.15 3.
Keep this in mind. That which was created and ordered must be kept in order for
it to continue to exist. B)
Christ was present as the “Word” John 1.1-3 1.
Stressed in Colossians 1.16-17 2.
The word was the agent or means through which God created all things. Without
the word, Jesus, there would not been no creation. C)
The Holy Spirit in Genesis 1.2 1.
The material was unorganized, and without life.
a. Waste – was not yet fully organized
b. Void – destitute of organized beings 2.
The Holy Spirit “moved upon the face of the waters”
a. The six days of creation were 6 periods of organization, or forming.
b. To “organize” is to arrange or constitute interdependent parts (a
car exhibits organization) 3.
The word “Universe” comes from two words which means to combine into one
form; a putting together II)
The Holy Spirit and Organized Matter A)
Three Hebrew words 1.
Bara – created, or called into existence, Genesis
1.1 2.
Asah – to make, Genesis 1.26
a. Man was made or formed from material that already existed.
b. Adam was made from the dust of the ground; God could have just spoken
him into existence but He did not.
c. Eve was made from one of Adam’s ribs. 3.
Yarsar – to form, Genesis 2.7 B)
The chaos in Genesis 1.1 was brought into order in six days 1.
Each living being produces after its own kind,
Genesis 1.11 2.
The material laws or physics are stable, they do not change 3.
No new physical laws were created after Genesis 1. We may understand them better
but they existed in Genesis 1. 3.
The order of the world today shows the power, wisdom, and authority of God, Acts
14.17 4.
Two important points:
a. The ordering of the universe was miraculous; vegetable and
animal life began by the miraculous; man’s creation was miraculous
b. Physical laws were given to perpetuate that which God created.
c. Kept in order through the laws governing the existence and
functioning of every material element. **
Spiritual Creation It
should be noted the Bible teaches that God is a spirit; He is not a physical
being. Man is both physical and spiritual in nature. I)
The Godhead In Incarnation A)
Incarnation – the combining of the Word with humanity; the Word becoming flesh
and dwelling among us. 1.
God the Father and Jesus 2.
Jesus was begotten of God, John 1.18 3.
God sent Jesus to live here upon the earth as a man, Romans
8.3. B)
Jesus took on the body of flesh, John 1.14 1.
He is called Immanuel, which means God with us, Matthew
1.23 2.
No one doubted Jesus’ humanity while He was here upon earth. C)
The Holy Spirit’s role 1.
The child inside of Mary was attributed to the work of the Holy Spirit, Matthew
1.18,20. 2.
The Holy Spirit came upon Mary and she was with child, Luke 1.31-35 II)
The Church A)
The church was planned by the Father, Ephesians 3.8-11 1.
He is the designer of the church 2.
Sending Jesus to die on the cross, His resurrection, and the preaching of the
Gospel were all foretold in the Old Testament B)
Jesus came to establish His church, Matthew 16.18 1.
The church is His body, the saved, Ephesians
5.23 2.
Jesus subjected Himself to do the will of the Father (John 5.30); Jesus said He would send the Holy Spirit to do His will,
John 16.13 C)
The Holy Spirit, John 14.26 1.
Christ is the head of His church, His body. He is the authority over the church. 2.
The Holy Spirit is the authority within the church.
a. He taught all things, John
14.26
b. Revealed all the truth that pertains to our salvation, 2
Peter 1.3
c. Confirmed the word, Hebrews
2.3-4
