Social Sins: Homosexuality

Introduction: Homosexuality is mentioned in Romans 1. Over the last 30 years there has been an effort to have homosexuality accepted as normal and morally good. Those that have opposed homosexuality have been portrayed as being homophobes in need of treatment, prejudice, uncaring, and unloving.

I) Homosexuality and its influence

A) Numerous groups are devoted to protecting and promoting gay rights

1. Queer Nation, Dykes on Bikes, PFLAG, to name a few.

2. Organizations such as NOW, NEA, and Humanist organizations have endorsed the homosexual movement.

B) Homosexuality has been advanced in many ways.

1. The media – television shows regularly have “gay” characters on them; movies, Hollywood stars that have either come out of the closet or supported those that have.

2. Educational institutions have been used to promote homosexuality.

            a. Heather Has Two Mommies and Jenny lives with Eric and Martin are two books aimed at 6 year olds.

            b. Textbooks supporting homosexuality required other wise the following are banned.

            i. Textbooks and other instruction that portray marriage as only between a man and a woman

ii. Textbooks and other instruction that say people are born male or female (and not in between)

            c. Homecoming king and queen contests that allow only boys to run for king and only girls to run for queen

3. Legislation, here are some examples from California :

            a. 2007 Senate Bill 777 bans all instruction, school activities, instructional materials and even textbooks from “reflecting adversely” on homosexuality, bisexuality, transgenders and those who think they are the opposite sex.

            b. Assembling Bill 14: Amends 50 different parts of the law with special protections from homosexuals, bisexuals and transgenders while at the same time punishing Christian churches, businesses and religious people for their beliefs.

            c. Senate Bill 11: Would grant all the rights of marriage to any two people who simply live together.

4. The courts have been used to grant and expand legal protection

            a. Hate crimes includes those committed upon a homosexual

            b. Connecticut Supreme Court demanded the State to issue marriage licenses to homosexuals.  October 10, 2008 the Connecticut Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that same sex couples have the right to wed rather than accept a civil union law designed to give them the same rights as married couples.

            c. California Supreme Court earlier this year ruled that the state had to grant marriage licenses to homosexuals.

5. Religion has been used to advance homosexuality

            a. Some denominations now grant them into their fellowship and       some “pastors” have come out of the closet

            b. God wants us to be happy and God wants us to love each             other. What could be wrong with 2 people in a loving and dedicated    relationship?

            c. In Canada freedom of speech does not extent to Bible teaching on homosexuality

II) Arguments defending homosexuality

A) Quote from the Kinsey Report, a study done in the late 40’s and early 50’s

B) It can be forgiven

C) People are born that way and can not help themselves

D) The scriptures say nothing about natural homosexuals

E) Social prejudice

III) The Kinsey Report

A) Study done by Alfred C. Kinsey in the late 1940’s and early 50’s

1. Supposedly said that 10% of the population composed of homosexuals

2. Quoted as proof that homosexual behavior is not confined to a small group but a large group of people

B) Kinsey report is flawed

1. About 25%, 5,300 male subjects were former or present prisoners

2. Some were recruited from “sex classes” where they had attended to get the answer to their sexual problems

3. At least 200 were male prostitutues

4. Kinsey himself never said this report proved that 10% of the population is homosexuals. “Only that 10% of men over age 16 are more or less homosexual for periods of up to three years.”

5. “Kinsey’s conclusions on human sexuality have to some extent become a self-fulfilling prophecy through the ‘sexual revolution’ that they helped inspire. Also, mechanisms are now in place to ensure the continuation of this process. New developments in sex education, for example, are leading to the exposure of more and more children in the teaching that heterosexuality is merely one ‘option’ in a range of acceptable sexual behaviors.” Kinsey, Sex and Fraud: The Indoctrination Of A People” page 10.

6. Other studies contradiction the Kinsey Report

            a. France   1991-1992: exclusive lifetime homosexual rates were 0.7% for men and 0.6 for women; lifetime homosexual experiences was 4.1% for men and 2.6% for women

            b. Britain 1990- 1991: 1.4% of men had homosexual experience in the 5 years preceding the survey

            c. University of Chicago 1989: 1.2% of males and 1.2% of females reported homosexual activity in the year preceding the survey

IV) It can be forgiven

A) Meaning it can be forgiven and practiced, 1 Corinthians 7.24

1. This is accepted by many in relation to adulterous marriages, so why not?

2. Let us apply this to pedophiles, polygamy, or bestiality.

B) 1 Corinthians 7.4 goes to verse 19

1. Speaking of outward relationships and circumcision. Neither one was wrong or sinful.

2. Repentance is necessary for any forgiveness.

3. Homosexuality is a sin before a person obeys the Gospel and is afterward.

V) Natural Homosexual – people that are born this way

A) God made us this way

1. It harms no one and is accepted by many societies.

2. If it is sinful it is God’s fault.

B) God does not give us a sinful disposition, James 1.13-14

1. The sexual needs have a proper place to be fulfilled, 1 Corinthians 7.1-2

2. People can develop and be taught an unnatural act until it becomes part of their character, Ephesians 2.1-4

3. The progression of sin corresponds to the acceptance of homosexuality, Romans 1.20-26

            a. Called a sin – condemned

            b. Becomes a disease – to be treated not condemned

            c. Remain silent – let’s study it

            d. Tolerate it as an alternative lifestyle. Exchange the truth of God for a lie.

            e. Accept it as normal.

            f. Persecute those that call it a sin.

VI) Re-interpreting the scriptures

A) God does not condemn the “natural homosexual”

1. God condemns the heterosexual involved in a homosexual relationship, and homosexuals not committed to one partner.

2. The word homosexual is not in the Greek of Hebrew

3. God is condemning inhospitality

B) What does the Bible teach?

1. A sin practiced by Sodom and Gomorrah , Genesis 19.1-11

2. Sodomites – males temple prostitutes, 1 Kings 14.24; 15.12; 22.46

3. Leviticus 18.22 an abomination, detestable thing

4. Leviticus 20.13 punished by death

5. Judges 19.22-23 tribe of Benjamin

6. Romans 1.26-27 includes women with women, against nature

7. 1 Corinthians 6.9 effeminate – boy kept for homosexual relations with a man, male who submits his body to unnatural lewdness

8. Fornication – any type of sex outside of marriage

VII) Simply Social Prejudice

A) Many societies accepted it in the Bible.

1. We are simply teaching prejudice

2. Compare homosexual marriages to the marriage of slaves which was not legal or bi-racial marriages.

B) What about Sodom and Gomorrah ?

1. The Romans accepted homosexuality, yet it is condemned in Romans 1

2. 1 Corinthians 6.9 who’s law was being broken?

VIII) What should our attitude be toward homosexuals and AIDS?

A) Medial facts – 4% of population has 44% of all male syphilis; 43% all hepatitis, 88% of AIDS

B) Created by lifestyle, matter of choice

1. Our task is to preach the Gospel and God’s plan of forgiveness.

2. The blood of Jesus cleanses us fro all iniquity if we do what He says.
