IF A MAN DIES SHALL HE LIVE AGAIN?

Job 14.1-14

II. THE BASIS OF JOB’S QUESTION

a. Death is a reality of life, Hebrews 9.27.

i. It is all around us.

ii. It is our destiny.

b. Death by itself is not comforting.

i. We wonder about the other side of the grave.

ii. Man without hope is tormented.

c. There are three possible answers.

i. No, man will not live again.

ii. Maybe/I don’t know if man will live again.

iii. Yes, man will live again.

III. NO MEANS

a. Man is only a physical being.

i. You must accept the doctrine of evolution by faith.

1. Many who believe in evolution are turning to creationism due to the questions that “Darwin’s Theory” can not

answer.

ii. Or believe God made man without a soul.

b. There is no…

i. Hope for man beyond the grave, Job 14.7-10

ii. No standard of morality.

iii. No judgment to come.

1. Some find it easier to believe in evolution because they do not want to face a judgment.

2. But life without a Day of judgment does not offer man hope.

IV. YES MEANS

a. Requires man to possess a spirit/soul.

i. The physical body will not come back from the grave.

ii. The physical body by nature is limited by time, if raised it will only die again, John 11.43-44.

1. Where is Lazarus now? Answer: In the grave.

2. 2 Corinthians 5.1-4

iii. If man has a spirit/soul where did it come from?

1. Now by evolution.

2. Promises of immortal salvation or fear of eternal damnation are both illusory and harmful…There is no

credible evidence that life survives the death of the body. --Humanist Manifesto

3. From a spiritual being, God, Genesis 1.26-27.

a. How do we know man has a soul?

i. By faith, Hebrews 11.3.

ii. Because man has a moral sense of right and wrong, Romans 2.14.

iii. Because the body dies, James 2.26.

iv. If man has a soul what happens to it at death?

1. Some would say it ceases to exist.

2. The Bible says it returns back to God, Ecclesiastes 12.7.

a. Waits the Day of Judgment.

b. Two Possible destinies for man’s soul.

i. Eternity in hell, Matthew 25.46.

ii. Eternity in heaven, Matthew 25.34

iii. Based on the word of God, John 12.48 and our obedience, Hebrews 5.9.

Conclusion: Job 19.25 Because Job understood his spiritual nature and God’s nature he could express the confidence in a redeemer. We know that God did indeed provide man with a redeemer, a Savior. Jesus provides us with the hope of heaven.
