its What's In The Seed That Counts

Introduction: A farmer in Iowa was growing corn when he observed the cattle farmer practice selective breeding. He applied that principle to one area of this corn crop. He placed bags over all but the best corn and then used that the next year. His neighbors thought he was crazy but after a number of years he started to have the best yield in the state. Eventually they came to him for their seed corn, he incorporated and started just selling seed corn. Funk’s Seed Company then bought out his business, leaving him a millionaire.  Funk’s Advertising was “It’s What’s In The Seed That Counts.” We want to notice what the Bible says about the seed.

1)     God Has A Seed

a)     Parable of the Sower in Luke 8; Mark 4 & Matthew 13.

i)        Luke 8.11 “The seed is the word of God”

ii)      Matthew 13.13 “the seed “word of His Kingdom”

iii)    1 Peter 1.22 The word will last forever and is incorruptible

b)     How valuable is the seed, the word of God?

i)        The word of God is above that of man, it reveals that which man did or could not know without divine revelation, Isaiah 55.8-9

ii)      Proverbs 14.12 men has often done what he thought was best but ended in tragedy.

c)     Dangerous to change the word of God, Galatians 1.6ff

i)        Two different words – for Gospel meaning of the same kind but not identical. For instance not all fruit is the same. An apple is a fruit but not all fruit are apples.

ii)      2 Timothy 4.1ff – sound doctrine – sound comes from the word hugiaino which means “healthy or wholesome” – hygiene comes from this word- the science of bodily cleanliness. Literally he is saying, good healthy teaching.

iii)    Jeremiah 14.14 the prophets were speaking lies and fables

iv)   Isaiah and Jeremiah both warned the people of prophets in whom there is not light, they were to try the prophets.

d)     The word is what will judge us on the last day, John 12.48

i)        I can decide to not listen – Cain, Nadab and Abihu had the word of God but they did not do what God said.

ii)      It is what is in the seed that Counts- the word of God is the seed.

2)     What is in the seed? Life

a)     The kernel is the life of the seed

i)        The germ of life God created

ii)      Life emerges from the seed, not kernel not life.

b)     Luke 8.11 the seed is the word of God

c)     John 6.63 the Holy Spirit gives life through the word of God

i)        James 1.18 “the word of truth”

ii)      That word of Truth must be planted in the heart of the seeker to create life. 1 Peter 1.22 “born again…through the word of God”

iii)    Not separate and apart from the word but by the word, Ephesians 2.8; 1.13

(1)   Dead in trespasses – made alive – by grace – through the word—the Gospel of your salvation

(2)   The seed, word of God has the power to give life

d)     What is in the seed? Food for the plant

i)        The kernel of life consumes the rest of the grain.

(1)   Planting seed potatoes I learned the meat of the potato consumed to aid the plant.

ii)      God’s word, 1 Peter 2.2 gives food to the Christian

(1)   The priesthood of Christ is superior to that of the Old Law in Chapter 5. Then the writer says in verse 11 “we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing”

(2)   The problem was with their maturity and ability to comprehend

(3)   Goes on the say they needed to grow up, Hebrews 6.1

(4)   How by studying, learning, and applying the word of God to our daily lives.

e)     What is in the seed? The power to produce after its own kind

i)        Genesis 1 each would produce after its kind, v. 12

(1)   Watermelons come from watermelon seed

(2)   This principle is set and fixed

ii)      Preaching the word of God in the first century produced Christians, Acts 11.26

(1)   There were no prefixes or suffixes to describe the type or kind of Christian because a Christian is just that a Christian.

(2)   A Christian is a disciple, a saint, a believer

(3)   They are added to the body of Christ, Romans 16.16

Conclusion: We have the seed with us today. It has not changed, it is still the word of God. No new revisions, additions or subtractions. This is still the word of life, able to convict the sinner and convert them. The word when studied and applied will build us up. It produces Christians today just as it did in the Book of Acts. Are you a Christian?
