Lessons From Moving
Introduction: According to the moving industry, the average
family will move once every five years. Moving trucks and companies are doing a
brisk business yet most people do not like moving. There are some lessons we can
learn from moving.
- I. We Tend To Accumulate a Lot of
"Things", "Stuff" Or "Junk"
a. We tend to keep and have too many items
i. Some of the treasures we just had to keep are worthless and needs to
be discarded
ii. Some are seldom used, kept for the "what ifs" or "one
of these days I might just need that"
iii. Some things we have forgotten we even have
b. Spiritually our lives must be kept clean
i. We can get caught up in the things that are worthless, 1
Peter 4.3-4
ii. Sin needs to be discarded and kept our of our lives, Galatians
2.20-21
iii. Fill our lives with things of value, Romans
6.17-18
iv. Get our priorities straight and use what we have
II. Material Things Are Temporary
- a. Most of what we own can be placed in one
truck
- i. Furniture gets scratched, broken, or dented
- ii. Could be stolen, lost in a wreck or fire
- iii. Even the house we own will belong to someone else
- b. The emphasis in the Bible is on the
spiritual things, Romans
14.17
- i. Our lives consist of more than what we own, Luke
12.15
- ii. Need to count our blessings daily for they may be gone tomorrow
- iii. Use what we have to serve God, 1
Timothy 6.17a, 18-19
III. It Is A Big World
- a. We tend to live in a small area of the
world
- i. This is only a small part of this state, and this state is a small
part of this country, this country is only one part of this world
- ii. I remember coming back to Russia thinking differently about my part
of this world and how many people need to hear the Gospel
- b. Many in this world is lost, Mark
16.15-16
- i. The Gospel is intended for all
- ii. Yet there is a small world of Christians
IV. We Are Simply Pilgrims
- a. We are not here permanently
- i. Moving creates changes, house, friends, etc
- ii. While traveling we may wonder, where do we belong?
- b. Abraham, Hebrews
11.13-16
- i. Each generation comes and goes
- ii. Life here is temporary, 1
Peter 1.24-25
V. Moving Is A Matter Of Faith
- a. Most of what we do as Christians is a matter of faith, 2 Corinthians
5.7
- i. Jobs, marriage, child rearing, etc.
- ii. We either believe what the Bible says or we don’t
- iii. What we believe will be seen in our actions
- b. Preachers and congregations both act by faith
