The Lord's Debate Notes

Introduction:  How do you study the Bible?  The approach we use will determine the results we obtain.  How you ever studied with someone only to be frustrated?  How can people read the same passages and get entirely different meanings?  In order to improve our study of the Bible we want to learn how Jesus studied with people.

I)  Jesus Used Questions To Teach

A) He used questions to get people to think.

1.  Notice the different in the two questions, Luke  9.18-20

2.  Questions can be used to:

a.  Get people involved. Go from being passive to active.

b.  Cause people to make a choice.  OK, they you tell me the answer.

c.  To illustrate a point, John 6.5-6

II)  Jesus Demanded Honesty

A)  Once people proved themselves to be dishonest, Jesus would go elsewhere, Mark 8.11-13

1.  They had signs, wonders, and the Old Testament to study.

2.  Honesty is a two way street in that we also must be honest, Luke 20.1-8

B) As we study we must be truthful

1.  If a person is not truthful, further study is useless, Luke 9.5

2.  Jesus did not tolerate hypocrisy, intellectual dishonesty.

III) Jesus Sought To Establish The Principle

A)  We must see the principle in order to apply it

1. The principle of paying taxes, Luke 20.22-26

2.  Question of the resurrection, Luke 20.27,34-38

a.  Side issues don't matter; emotional arguments, trickery, going to the extreme, etc.

b. They often cloud the issue but the principle is still the same.

B)  Many studies fail because we never establish the key principle

IV)  Jesus Answered With God's Word

A)  It is written, Luke 10.25-28

1.  Too much human logic and not enough scripture "I thinks" and "I don't see anything wrong with it"

2.  If the Bible says so, the issue is settled.

B)  Jesus harmonized the scriptures

1.  Jesus only answered from one passages, not a battle of the concordances.

2. Sometimes various passages can be used to show the preponderance of evidence but a person who will accept one passage will not accept 100.

V) Jesus Stood Firm

A)  He did not apologize for the truth

1.  Matthew 19.10-12 it is up to us to accept the truth.

a. Our task is to rightly divide the word of God, 2 Timothy 2.15

b.  Not down play it or apologize for it.

2.  God's word does not change, Luke 16.16-17

B)  Up to us to conform to His Will

V)  Jesus Demanded Action

A) Application is the key to doing good

1.  Coach can instruct the player but the player must perform

2.  Luke 10.27, 36,37 do likewise.

3.  John 8.11 go and sin no more.

B) Whatever the Bible teaches is what we are to accept, believe, and then do.

Conclusion: Luke 20.40 are you willing to study with Jesus.
