Praying In 2010

1 Timothy 2.1-4

Introduction: Now that we have celebrated the passing of a year and entering a New Year, I want us to think about our prayers.  What are some worthy things for us to pray for in 2010? Realizing that we should think about ourselves but not be selfish in our prayers as seen in James 4.1-4.

I) Let Us Not Be Defeatist or Pessimistic But Optimistic

A) There is nothing new under the sun.

1. While some things may try our patience and souls we us realize that it has all been done before.

B) God hears the prayers of the righteous and know what we need, Jeremiah 33.3

1. This does not minimize our need to pray but to give us assurance.

2. The power of prayer is with God and not us and there is nothing our God can not do!

C) Supplications, intercessions

1. Intercession goes between two parties.  Represents one praying on behalf of another.  We can sometimes pray for those that can not pray for themselves.

2. Supplications is to plead, entreat, besiege.

3. We see this in Exodus 32.11-14 when Moses interceded on behalf of the people.

a. To soften the face by stroking.  To remove the anger from the father.

b. God was angry with Israel and Moses pleaded on Israel ’s behalf.

II) Let Us Pray For the Last To Be Saved, Romans 10.1

A) Paul did not mean some things by this statement

1. Not that God would accept people who never named the name of Jesus to be saved, Acts 4.12

2. Not that God would simply accept all of those that despite their rejection of Jesus.

3. Not that all idolaters, infidels, immoral, ungodly people would go to heaven.

B) Paul meant

1. Those that hear the Gospel of Christ will have open hearts so as to accept the truth, Romans 10.10.

2. The Gospel would be preached through out the land. Romans 1.16

3. What better thing could we pray for than those that are lost to be saved?

III) Let Us Pray That We Will Be Faithful In Our Service To God

A) That my heart will not grow cold and indifferent to the Gospel of Christ

1. The church at Laodicea is known as the “lukewarm church”, Revelation 3.15-19.

2.  We need zeal, Titus 2.11-15

a. Zeal will prompt me to study my Bible

b. Zeal will motivate me to assemble with the saints as often as possible

c. Zeal will cause me to work with fear and trembling in service to God

B) That I will repent when I sin against God

1. We, I, should strive to resist sin and live a pure and Holy life before God, 1 Timothy 2.8

2. But if and when I sin to have a humble heart and repent so as to leave sin behind, 1 John 1.8-9

3. We should have the attitude exhibited in Luke 18.13

IV) Let Us Pray For Our Young People

A) Their heart will not be like some of those described in Luke 8.

1. They will be wise and choose to serve God and hardened by Satan, Luke 8.12.

2. They will not be quickly drawn away by the world, Luke 8.13

3. They will not be faithful until they get busy and have no time for God, Luke 8.14.

4. But that their faith will be growing and solid, Luke 8.15

B) Pray

1. They will have the faith of a Joseph

2. The heart of a David

3. The zeal of a Timothy, Phil. 2.19-22

V) Pray For Our Older Members

A) They be comforted in the days ahead and not stop short of the goal of heaven

1. I know it can be discouraging to have failing health, live in a society that does not value experience

2. Keep on teaching, praying, serving, providing the right example; for we need you.

VI) Let Us Pray For Our Leaders, 1 Timothy 2.2

A) Our world leaders

1. They will seek approval from God and not man.  We see laws and decisions that make it harder to talk about God or read the Bible in public.

2. They will enact laws and judgments that will please God, Proverbs 14.34

3. They will not be a Pharoah and harden their hearts; or a Herod and seek to kill the innocent; or like the Jewish leaders and fight against God.

4.  We will live a “quiet life”

a. One of peace and harmony, able to declare the Gospel and worship in peace.

b. Able to provide for our families

B) For the elders of this flock, our deacons, and the preacher

1. To make decisions according to God’s law, James 1.5

2. For conviction to always do what is right, be impartial, and care for the souls of every person

3. For our influence to grow in our community.

Conclusion: Let us not forget that God sits on His throne in heaven, Habakkuk 2.20.  Jesus is at the right hand of God, Acts 2.36; Hebrews 7.25  Let us live as citizens of heaven so we will have an eternal home with God.
