Psalm 119

Introduction:  This has been called the alphabetical Psalm.  The Hebrew alphabet consisted of 22 letters.  This Psalm is arranged according to those letters.  The first eight verses begin with the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. That is why there are 176 verses in this Psalm.  Example is the ABC's of God's Character.  One 1 verse does not refer to the law of God, v. 122.

A)  VV. 9-11 How Can A Young Man Cleanse His Way?

1. The importance of this question -- young people have greater freedom of time, must adopt some philosophy to guide them in life.

2. Time of temptations (sexual 2 Timothy 2.22), drinking etc.

3. Answer: By knowing the word of God and taking it to heart.

4.  Knowledge plus zeal and commitment, v. 112

B) V. 18 Open My Eyes That I May See Wonderous Things From Your Law

1.  Open means to be naked, uncovered, to disclose, to reveal.

2. To see beyond the surface (hidden pictures). This comes by meditation.

3.  To see the wisdom of God's law and to see life differently.

4. Earthly wisdom versus heavenly wisdom, James 3.13-18

C) V. 37 Turn Away My Eyes From Looking At Worthless Things

1. Worthless - vain and wicked things. 

a.  People looking at a wreck.

b. Pictures of Ted Bundy's autopsy.

2. There is danger in looking at sin.  (God gave us eyelids so we can shut them).

3. Jesus warns about lusting after a woman, Matthew 5.28; Job 31.1, 9-10

D) V. 45 I Will Walk At Liberty, For I Seek Your Precepts

1. Freedom does not mean nothing else do to, or liberty to sin. 

2.  The freedom from sin, the freedom to do right, James 1.25

3.  Who has freedom, the one ruled by sin, or the one who decides to serve God?

E) VV. 54-56 Your Statutes Have Been My Songs

1.  Songs can be pretty, very poetic, remembered, instructive.

2. They can be power and emotional.

3.  You can tell a  person or society by their songs, Ephesians 5.19; James 5.13

F)  V. 68 You Are Good And Do Good, vv. 74-75

1. There is a way that is right and cannot be wrong.

2.  God's way-- being baptized, wearing the name of Christ, etc.

3. Jesus was never wrong and God is never evil.

G)  v. 158 See The Treacherous And I Am Disgusted, Because They Do Not Keep Your Word, v. 136 Rivers Of Water Run Down My Eyes

1.  See the terribleness of sin, the hideous nature of sin is often disguised.

2.  See the pain and suffering caused by sin; families broken up, lives ruined, etc.

H V. 160 The Entirety Of Your Word Is Truth

1. Cannot pick and choose what we like or dislike, have our passages.

2. Must rightly divide the word of God, 2 Timothy 2.15
