School, For Children and Parents

Introduction: Notebooks, pens, pencils, folders, new clothes, are all signs of a new school year. Some look to it with joy and gladness, others with dread and sadness. The next school year will be very important; both parents and students need to use it wisely.

I) What is the key purpose of school?

A) To learn!

1. To be able to serve God better, Matthew 6.33

2. To develop your talents and abilities.

3. To prepare for the rest of your life, Ephesians 4.28

    a. "Will I ever be able to use this?" or, "Why do I have to know this?"

    b. You do not know what you will use in the future or what you will need to know.

B) Some keys to learning

1. Listen and follow directions, Proverbs 19.20; 13.1

    a. Ex. Of t-ball team made up of players that would listen

2. Pay attention to proper authority, Matthew 8.9

    a. God has all authority and today this is in His Son, Matthew 28.18

    b. Parents are given authority by God to rear their children, listen to your Mom and Dad.

    c. The school is given authority by your parents to teach you.

3. Think for yourself. Discern between good and bad; true and false.

    a. Not everything they teach you will be true but not everything is false either.

4. Study hard and do your best, Ecc. 9.10

II) Dangers we all have to be aware of

A) False teaching

1. Humanism sees the classroom as their pulpit.

2. Situation ethics, Acts 5.29

3. Do not lie but tell the truth

B) Violence/sexual attacks

1. One school will not allow young men and women to be in the same classes, lunchroom, or hallway at the same time.

2. Be careful of where you are at and who you are with.

C) Peer pressure, 1 Corinthians 15.33

1. Choose your friends carefully.

2. Do not let your friends drag you down with them.

III) Remember

A) Sin leads to misery, Proverbs 26.10; 13.15

1. Can not hide sin from God, Numbers 32.23

2. Do not do something you will be ashamed of others knowing about.

B) Find the right kind of friends, Ecc. 4.9-12

C) Avoid all forms of evil, 1 Thess. 5.22

D) Love the Lord, Matthew 22.37

1. God comes first, before classes, ballgamesIV) Parents

A) Have your priorities right

1. What priorities are you teaching your children? Matthew 6.33

    a. Do not tell your children, God comes first and then make decisions where everything else is more important.

    b. Example of Hannah, 1 Samuel 1.11. 20-22, 27-28

2. Remember you job is to protect your children and bring them up in the Lord, Ephesians 6.4

B) Communicate with your children

1. Talk to them and their teachers.

2. Ask, "What are you studying?"

C) Study and teach your children God’s word, Deut. 6.6-9

1. Take advantage of this year to make the Bible relevant to your child.

Conclusion: The Educated Fool, Ps. 14.1

1. Can read and write but does not read the Bible.

2. Can do higher math but does not look for higher spiritual values.

3. Can find a job but can not find their way to heaven.
