Sonlight

Genesis 1.14-18

Introduction: What is the most powerful physical thing you have ever seen? We may think of tornadoes, or hurricanes, or volcanoes. Each has great power but the most powerful physical thing man has ever seen is the sun.

I) The Power of the Sun/Son

A) Facts pertaining to the Sun

1. Sun is primarily made up of hydrogen 70%, helium 28%, and metals 2% (it is a big nuclear bomb)

2. Scientist say the sun is 4.5 billion years old and still has 5 billion years left

3. The Sun is not a solid mass like the earth but gases, for that reason the poles of the Sun rotate at a different rate than the middle.

4. It is the largest object in the solar system, containing from 98% to 99.8% of the total mass of the solar system.

5. Temperature inside the Sun is estimated to be over 20 million degrees Celsius.

            a. Outer temperature of the Sun is over 6,000 degrees Celsius (11,000 degrees Fahrenheit)

            b. Sunspots temperature is 4,000 degrees Celsius (7,000 degrees Fahrenheit)

6. Solar flares

          a. “Solar flares and associated Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) strongly influence our local space weather. They produce streams of highly energetic particles in the solar wind and the Earth's magnetosphere that can present radiation hazards to spacecraft and astronauts. Solar flares release a cascade of high energy particles known as a proton storm. Protons can pass through the human body, doing biochemical damage[citation needed]. Most proton storms take two or more hours from the time of visual detection to reach Earth. A solar flare on January 20, 2005 released the highest concentration of protons ever directly measured[3], taking only 15 minutes after observation to reach Earth, indicating a velocity of approximately one-third light speed.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_flare

          b. This energy is ten million times greater than the energy released from a volcanic explosion. On the other hand, it is less than one-tenth of the total energy emitted by the Sun every second. http://hesperia.gsfc.nasa.gov/sftheory/flare.htm

B) The Son is powerful

1. Without the Son there would have not been the Sun, John 1.1-3

2. As deity the Son of God had the ability to calm the seas, turn water into wine, heal the sick, raise the dead, and overcame death itself.

3. But the most powerful attribute Jesus exhibited was love.

            a. He willing suffered the shame and pain of dying on the cross.

            b. Why? Because of His love for us, John 15.13

II) The Sun/Son and life

A) The Sun makes life possible

1. Giver of light –

            a. the Moon actually refers the light from the Sun

            b. Solar eclipse is when the Moon blocks the Sun light from the earth.

2. Giver of warmth – we speak of solar energy for it heats up our planet

3. It makes life possible for plants and animals alike.

B) He is the light

1. John explained his role was to bear witness of the Light John 1.8, 9.

2. Jesus proclaimed Himself to be the Light of the world, John 8.12

3. He revealed the will of the Father to all of mankind; by His life and teachings.

            a. If we see the Son we will see the Light

            b. We see the Son we see the way to heaven, John 14.6

C) He is the giver of life (makes life possible)

1. Giver of life in the sense of creating man

2. More importantly the giver of spiritual life, John 10.10

            a. These people already had a life but they did not have the life         Jesus was talking about.

            b. He was gave His life so we can have a greater life

III) Distance and Relationship

A) The Sun and earths rotation

1. Determines the length of our days, seasons, and years.

2. It takes the earth one year to rotate around the Sun

B) The earth’s relationship to the Sun

1. The earth is roughly 149,600,000 KM, or 92,957,300 miles, from the Sun.

2. If the earth was 10 million miles closer it would be too hot to sustain life.

3. If the earth was 10 million miles further away it would be too cold.

4. If the earth’s daily rotation was slower the side opposite of the Sun would freeze while the side facing the Sun would burn up.

5. Life on earth is only possible because it has the “right relationship” to the Sun

            a. Mercury is 57,910 km and too hot, while Pluto is 5,913,520,000 km     away and a ball of ice.

            b. Mars is the planet that comes the closest to duplicating the earth’s         relationship to the Sun is 227,940,000 km away from the Sun but not       able to sustain life.

C) The Son of God demands the proper relationship

1. There are 7 other planets in our solar system but the earth is the only one with life. Why?

            a. Because they are either too far away or too close to the Sun

            b. If the earth should change its position it would become a dead     planet

2. We must have the proper relationship to the Son in order to be alive and growing

            a. Just believing is not enough John 12.42-50

            b. There were lost believers, Acts 8.12-13, 22-23

3. Believers must remain faithful unto death, Revelation 2.10

4. We must abide in Jesus to be alive and growing, John 15.6

5. To abide in Him we must obey Him, Hebrews 5.9

Conclusion: There is no greater power than the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Those that relied on God in the Bible were able to overcome whatever obstacles that came their way. Those that did not were lost. How about you? Are you walking in the Sonlight or in darkness? The one thing about the Sun is you can see it from a great distance; the Son of God can be seen in His word. 1 John 1.7
