Summer Is Over

Jeremiah 8.18-22

Introduction: the days of Jeremiah were dark. Judah had forsaken God’s law and repentance was not forth coming. I can also see some of our young people thinking the same thing as their summer vacation comes to a close. Each school year starts the same way; coming quicker than we want and offering the promise of new things. There are some things we need to remember as the new school year begins.

I) This Is A Limited Time In Your Life

A) Going back to school – getting up early, books, homework, new teachers and classmates

1. At this point in your life you may think I will never get out of school. But you will.

2. As you look back at this time you will have a different perspective of what you did and what you learned.

B) Another summer is over as time goes by quickly

1. Why is it the summer always goes by quickly?

            a. We usually associate good things with the summer: more freedom to do what we want, not having to wear coats, not having to shovel snow, gardens and fresh vegetables and fruits.

2. Keep in mind that the school year will also pass by quickly.

II) Young People: Things to Remember

A) God knows all that you do and say, 2 Corinthians 5.10

1. Separation from parents and being with other young people may lead to temptations.

2. This is a time for you to stand on your own and be faithful, Genesis 39.9

3. Attend services faithfully, keep on growing spiritually, 1 Peter 2.2-3

B) Your parents are smarter than you think

1. They know the temptations and problems of life, 1 Corinthians 10.13

2. Talk with them when problems arise.

C) Do your best

1. Now is the time to lay a good foundation for your life, Ecc. 9.10

2. Your education will determine what you will do with your life and what kind of life you will have.

3. More important than the grades you make will be the character you develop.

            a. Attitudes toward learning, homework, teachers, parents, etc.

            b. The willingness to work for a goal

D) There is a difference between knowledge and wisdom

1. There is a proper place for knowledge and learning, Ecc. 12.10

2. Wisdom comes with time and development.

3. Do not let people teach you  things that are not so.

            a. Millions if not Billions are spent each year on education and educational process.

            b. Yet many have become educated fools, Romans 1.22; Acts 17.21, 1 Corinthians 1.18ff all point out the limitations to human wisdom.

            c. Knowledge without a moral compass can be dangerous.

III) Things to Remember As Parents

A) This is a limited time, a few brief years

B) Now is not the time to “turn your children loose”

1. Too many children are rearing themselves

2. Each age level needs their parents for different reasons and not just for the money.

3. Get to know your children and keep up with them

C) Understand the peer pressure your children face, 1 Corinthians 15.33

1. Classmates with broken homes, drug usage, profanity, violence, casual sexual attitudes, etc.

2. Take an interest in your children’s classes, their friends, extra-activities

3. Example of the commercials taking about the difference between the sixth and 7th grade in the usage of  pot, drugs, sex, etc.

D) Teach your children God’s word, Ephesians 6.4

1. Sometimes our children have not lost their faith, they never had it.

2. Provide a good example by placing the emphasis on spiritual matters

3. God expects your to nourish your children.

IV) Summer Is Over

A) The context: it was too late to avoid God’s punishment

1. There are a lot of things we hear but only listen to after it is too late.

2. Some of the Jews were now listening but it was too late.

B) It is too late…

1. To rear your children after they are grown

2. To do your best in school after your graduate

3. To obey the Gospel after you die or when you face God in judgment.

Conclusion: Summer is over; the harvest is past, and we are lost. Do not live so this applies to you.
