That Which Jesus Did Not Know Introduction:
This lesson stems from observations which lead to some questions. The
observation: Jesus never knew what it was to fail, and, Jesus never knew what it
was to grow old. Some implied questions is how can Jesus sympathize with
us, 1 Peter 2.21-25, when He never experienced what I have or am
experiencing? 1)
We often have trouble understanding the Deity Of Jesus a)
He was Immanuel, God with us, Matthew 1.23
i) Jesus was all
powerful – calmed the
ii. Jesus knew all things – He knew the life of the Samaritan woman (John
4); what people were thinking (Mark
5); His manner of death (Matthew
17.22-23); Judas would betray Him (Matthew
26.25). b)
It was hard for His disciples to comprehend Jesus’ deity
i) Matthew 16.13-14 some thought He was Elijah, John the Baptist, or
one of the prophets.
ii) Peter’s confession, Matthew
16.15-16
iii) Still Peter had trouble understanding what this meant, Matthew
16.21-23 as Peter
proceeded to tell Jesus what to do. 2)
Bible says Jesus became God incarnate – in the flesh (John 1.14) a)
Philippians 2.5-8 Jesus
took on the form of a servant b)
Hebrews 2.17-18 became
like His brethren, He had to have a physical body to die on the cross C)
Hebrews 4.15 Jesus
was tempted like we are d)
Hebrews 5.8-9 Jesus
learned obedience (?) 3)
How did Jesus learn obedience if He knew everything? a)
Jesus made Himself subject to the
law, He learned obedience to the law and to the will of the Father b)
Important to understand the different uses of the word “know”
i) Know from the Greek word ginosko
“know, come to know”
ii) Know from the Greek word oida
“be intimately acquainted with, stand
in a close relation to.”
iii) Jesus used both words. John
8.55
iv) Jesus knew (ginosko) God by experience with Him through His
word.
v) Jesus knew (oida) God due to being with the Father in heaven
before He came to earth. c)
Know can refer to knowledge by observation and study or personal experience
i) Example: My brother-in-law is allergic to skunks, wasp, etc. One
time he had to be taken to the hospital because he could not breathe.
I may know (read and study) about allergic reactions but I
do not know (personal experience) this reaction.
ii) Same could be said for child birth, parenting, flying a plane, etc. d)
Jesus experienced pain and suffering (learned obedience)
i) in one sense
we can say Jesus knew what it would be like to die on
the cross because of His deity. In another sense we can say Jesus had not
experienced personally the pain and agony of dying on the
cross.
ii) Jesus grew in wisdom and stature,
Luke 2.52
iii) Jesus did
feel the temptations of life, 1 John
2.15-17 (Matthew 4) e)
Jesus did not grow old or fail in anything He did
i) Jesus did not experience growing old but He knows what it is to
suffer and die.
ii) Jesus did not experience failure (sin) in His life, Mark
7.37 “He has done
all things well”
iii) Yet He knows the penalty for sin as He died on the cross for our
sins, 2 Corinthians 5.21 f)
Jesus did not know when the Day of Judgment would come, Mark 13.32 Conclusion:
Jesus came to this world with knowledge of the Father and heaven. Taking on the
body of flesh made certain things possible. It became possible for Jesus to be
tempted, to hunger and thirst, and to die on the cross. All of our temptations
falls into three categories; lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride
of life. Those Jesus faced and overcame. We are instructed to follow in His
footsteps and live a life free of sin. |
