Things You Should Not Say To God

Introduction:  Recently I came across an article "Top 10 Things you just can't say to your boss."  This got me to thinking about some things people have said to God but should not of.  Some we can find in the Bible.

I) I Just Can't Do This Job

A)  In the work place

1.  Nobody likes a naysayer, whiners do not last long on the job.

2.  Ask for assistance, but never admit defeat or give up.

B) In The Bible

1.  Moses said he could not go back to Egypt and bring Israel out

a. Who am I? Exodus 3.11

d. Just pick someone else, Exodus 4.13

2.  In each case God gave Moses what was necessary to accomplish his task.

a.  Not who Moses was, but who God was, Exodus 3.12-14

b.  God gave Moses miraculous signs, Exodus 4.2ff.

c.  God would tell Moses what to say, Exodus 4.11-12

C) How many times have you said to God

a.  Do we believe God can help us? If so, ask for His help.

b.  Give us what we need to be able to do whatever needs to be done?  Make it a prayer.

II) That Is Not My Job Description

A) There is an importance of understand "your job description"

1.  "Before you complain about a task that seems beneath your employment status or outside your areas of expertise, consider how much you value your position."

2.  A lot times our job changes as needs change.

B)  In the Bible

1.  Cain asked, "Am I my brother's keeper?" Genesis 4.9

a.  Cain's job description was to serve God, to offer a sacrifice that pleased Him.

b.  His job was not to get angry at God and murder his brother.

2.  Sometimes Kings wanted to act as Priest.  King Saul offered sacrifice in 1 Samuel 13.8-14

a.  His job was to serve God, to lead the children of Israel according to God's instructions.

b. It was not to be a priest, or to change God's word.

C)  How many times have you said I want to be a Christian but that is not my job description?

1.  What is our job description?  Ecc. 12.13

a.  To serve God, to offer ourselves as spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God, Romans 12.1.

b.  To restore the sinful, Galatians 6.2

c.  To bear one another's burdens, Galatians 6.2

d.  To do good to all men, Galatians 6.10

e.  To spread the word of God by word and conduct, 1 Corinthians 11.1.

2.  Our job is not to change God's word or to be the judge of people's souls.

III) I Am Over Qualified For This Job

A) Sometimes people think they don't have to do something because it is beneath them.

1.  Often you have to put in your time doing lesser jobs to prove your ability to handle more.

2.  True talent and training generally prove themselves on the job.

B) In the Bible

1.  Pharaoh did not see the need to obey God, Exodus 5.2. He was already his own god.

2.  The Kings of Israel did not see the need to obey God.

3. Some people did not obey the Gospel because they were too smart and it was beneath them, 1 Corinthians 1.26ff

4.  This can also be said for those people on Mars Hill in Acts 17.

C) Have you ever read the Bible but then decided to not do something commanded because you did not have to?

1.  Some people decide they don't have to obey the Gospel because they are either too good, or not good enough.

2. Some decide they don't have to repent because they cannot admit they are wrong.

3. Some decide they don't have to assemble with the saints because they are too spiritually mature.

4. Some decide they don't have to restore a brother or sister because they are too valuable in other areas.

Conclusion:  Ephesians 4.1 "I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to have walk worthy of the calling (vocation) with which you were called."
